I have got a Sony GX120 Dvd recorder and when it's not working but plug in at the mains it makes a noise for few second's,to me it sounds like a fan.

Try connecting to their website and see if they have a troubleshooter or a Q&A. Better still contact their customer support section. If it was bought locally have it checked out.
