I have two Sony DVD recorders. I am able to play a shop DVD on one of them but when I try to play on the 2nd one the message "CAN'T PLAY" comes up. The recorders are both connected properly to Sony TVs. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Just a thought but what region is the DVD?

The DVD is OK for region as I am able to play it on !st Sony recorder. Its my daughters TWILIGHT fro HMV
Do all of your other DVD's play OK on your daughter's Sony DVD Player or does the problem only exist with her 'Twilight' DVD ?
Check all your Scart lead connections to the TV just incase of a bad connection

Other DVDs can play on recorder , such as those free ones from Daily mail etc. It would appear that Twilight and maybe Supernatural also cannot play. But these DVDs can play on my other DVD recorder so its a bit of a mystery.
Thanks for help.

Sometimes if a DVD shows up as 'Invalid Disc' or 'Can't Play' etc, it can be due to the laser being slightly out of alignment on a different player, making it more sensitive to dust, grease marks and the like which will seemingly play okay in one, but not in the other.
Insert a Laser Cleaning Disc into the 'faulty' player, then when done, clean the discs before playing.
