I am very impressed with my Linksys router.

Excellent wireless range , easy to set up and very easy to secure.

Thankyou Ethel, yes I have heard of that one as well thanks for your info I will get one tomorrow.

Thanks once again.
Netgear is generally considered to be the best. It is certainly the only brand that works faultlessly with my local telecoms provider.

Thankyou dodgyshirt,I was going to get a Linksys router this afternoon but I think you have given me food for thought I will wait till Monday and see if anybody else on answerbank gives me any othe names for Routers also I will then have a few to choose from.

Thanks once again for your information.
That`s OK, I live in the Hull area where unfortunately we are supplied by Kingston Communications for all telephone-related services. BT etc have no foothold here whatsoever.

KC`s broadband service under the Karoo banner use different values for the VPI and VCI protocols and different Encapsulation and Modulation settings compared to BT.

I have used D-Link and Toshiba modem routers here with only limited success.

I finally bit the bullet and paid the extra price for a Netgear DG834GT which is performing faultlessly.

When initially setting up, it interrogates the line and actually sets itself up to the required settings. All you need to is provide your log-in details and set up the security elements which is also very easy to do.

I will not say anything against the Linksys, D-Link etc. but KC`s settings and service are the acid test for this type of equipment and I cannot praise the Netgear too highly.
Linksys, Belkin, Netgear, D-Link, etc., all work very well. I've had success with Belkin. Netgear are a known brand that produce larger-scale items too. Any one should fit your needs.

Thankyou dodgyshirt & fo3nix,thankyou to both of you I think it's out of Linksys,Neatgear & Belkin will decide when I go to the computer shops and the assistant shows me all three tells me about them and the(Price).

Thanks once again to you both.
As fo3nix mentioned the 'big four' - I would throw in that when looking at price, see if there is a deal which includes a USB wireless dongle - believe me, it can come in handy in the future for an extra computer (or a visiting friend who doesn't have wireless built-in to their laptop).

Thanks wideboy, never heard of a usb wireless dongle before I'll have to find out about this.

Thanks once again for your help.
doddsredoubt: basically, if you want wireless internet, then you'll need a device to send the internet signal from your phone line, and you'll need a device to receive the signals. the box that sends the signal is the wireless router (make sure you get the right sort -- just a router, or one with an ADSL modem).

you also need something to receive the signals... some laptops (many, now) come with this receiver built-in. older laptops and especially desktop PCs don't have this, so you need to buy a receiver that just plugs into the back and lets the laptop or PC get the wireless internet signal. this is the 'dongle' wideboy talks about.
