My email is hard to read as the left hand side has an unwanted column with suggestions such as "looks like you're......." How do I lose this so that the reading pane is bigger and easier to read?

You could try the webmail ad blocker. WAB. you can find it in the Chrome web store.

I think that only works if you are subscribed to outlook .com Tora. It may not work on the old hotmail set up.
