What do you use it for, tam? Chris will need to know so he can recommend one that is suitable for your needs.

I'm thinking that the next set up I buy may be a laptop with a separate, large monitor so that I can use it as desktop when needed. Wall mount the monitor to save space.
I run both a tower and a lappie
Lenovo have a good reputation

Hi Barry thanks, I did wonder about a laptop. I don't use it alot these days tbh mostly for printing off bills etc. I do m8st things on my phone x
Question Author
Yes lenovo, I like too
If your printer is wireless you should be able to print from your phone.

Do you do any high end gaming that needs a lot of resources and an expensive graphics card? This Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto rather than Solitaire and Angry Birds
Question Author
Sorry Barry I have no idea about that, I don't know how to print off my phone, I don't have anyone to help
Is your printer wireless?
Question Author
Don't know
I do most things on my phone too, but I have a laptop for printing and for spreadsheets, and times when the phone is just too small.

i recently used one of buenchico's previous suggestions - AC computer warehouse to buy a refurbished laptop. It was an HP elitebook - very cheap and powerful with the choice of windows 10 or 11. Pleased with the overall buying experience and the HP's aluminium slim case laptop is a thing of beauty (to me) for under £500.
Tam, is your printer plugged in to your PC?
Do you know the make and model of your printer?
in my experience most people only use a fraction of their PC's ability anyway so when I am asked this I always say just buy a cheap one from ebay/amazon or one of the supermarkets. Well assuming you do not have specific needs. The only thing I would say is make sure it has SSD. eg
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
If you want a desktop, I recently bought one of these, more than enough for my needs:

Chromebooks are great if you understand what they are, what they are not and you are always online.
They are not suitable for everyone
Hi Tamaris.

For your basic needs, I'd want to see a machine with 8GB of RAM, a solid state drive (which doesn't need to be very big unless you're intending to store vast numbers of video files or similar on it) and Windows 11.

If you're tempted by a laptop, and you want to keep your expenditure down to a minimum, this is what I'd go for:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185909011533
(If you were using it at home, I'd add on a Bluetooth mouse. I hate touchpads!).
The Thinkpad X250 is a superb machine. (It's what I'm typing this one now!)

For a desktop machine, I'd certainly consider this:
https://accomputerwarehouse.com/product/hp-elitedesk-705-g3-budget-quad-core-pc/
(Select the option to add on a 120GB SSB, taking the price to £154, and specify that you want Windows 11)

NB: I've used both of those suppliers, several times, and I've got 100% confidence in them.

If you'd rather head for Currys (even though I wouldn't!), this would be the laptop that I'd suggest for you:
https://www.currys.co.uk/products/asus-vivobook-15-x515ja-15.6-laptop-intel-core-i3-256-gb-ssd-silver-10242866.html

. . . with this being the desktop machine that I'd go for:
https://www.currys.co.uk/products/hp-m01f2003na-desktop-pc-intel-core-i3-256-gb-ssd-black-10239697.html
Question Author
Don't like curry's Chris, always trying to get you to take out warranties etc. It's a problem when I have noone here to help. I always think you give me the best help. I'll take a look at those. I only need it really for the printer etc, don't do much on it now since I gave up teaching Spanish to students at the beginning of covid.
did you look at my amazon suggestions?
Question Author
Thank you tora yes I did.
Question Author
Thank you Chris I have ordered the laptop you advised, the first one x
