This word crops up now and again and I'm assuming it's a game. Can anyone please explain it to me?

It's in the New York Times. You have 5 goes to guess the days word. Enter any 5 letter word. If the letters are grey they are not in the word. In yellow they are in the word but not in the correct place. If green they are correct.y placed

I t3nd to start with the word ADIEU as it has 4 out of the 5 vowels in it.

Snap, Smowball, then I go for strop, find that’s a good combo.
Word master is a good one too, no limit on games, love Quordle best though.

Just a tip on how I play it:
If you get one or two letters on your first go, don't try and use these in your second attempt ..... instead maximise your chances by using 5 different letters, thus eliminating as many letters as possible
I always use the same three words in my first three guesses - eliminating 15 out of 26 letters.
My first three words are nearly always (depending on what letters are marked as correct):
TRAIN
CHOSE
FUNKY
