anyone have any idea if something like this exists?

im looking for one i can clamp to my bedside table or headboard, and pull it down and move it around in front of me to whatever position im in

then when im finished - i want to be able to push it up and away from me to the side so its safe so i can go to sleep

any ideas if this has a name?

everything ive found so far are proper mounts for monitors etc, but theyre not designed to be moved around, they can just be set to a position and left that way

thank you for your help :)

trying to envisage what you mean - I suppose I bit like those mounts you can get that go on the wall for big tellys?

its a 17" and fairly weighty laptop too, so the gooseneck flexible ones probably wouldnt work as theyre aimed at tablets

unless perhaps i used about 3 of them together?
are you renting or own? Would you be able to secure to a wall?

this one attaches to a "desk"
Very difficult to get one for a 17" laptop, check carefully before you order.

bednobs - yes, something like that - or one with a tray to sit the laptop on, with 'telescopic' arms or something.

the problem with most laptop mounts and stands is theyre designed to be adjusted and left alone
or be on a desk facing you - they dont have the hinges etc to manouvre them much

i found one that looked ideal - it was like an angle poise lamp, but with a bracket instead of the light - however it was for mobiles and tablets so i doubt itd hold the weight of a laptop

ideally itd be a gooseneck flexi style but strong enough to hold the weight
itd need to be a thick and strong one

i found a bracket that i could possibly adapt and attach to an arm if the bracket wasnt right

i thought i could insert something flat into the bracket instead of a tablet and use it as a table perhaps.

it seems its the weight for the arms thats the problem
the laptop weight 8.4 pounds

cant spend 100s on it either :(

i thought this mount could be used to hold a little table, as it goes to 27" - if it fits onto the hinge

but as i say, its the weight im not sure about :(
To hold that sort of weight it will probably need some sort of gas lift, it will be expensive.
The more I think about it the more I think you'd be better off with a wall mounted apparatus
Question Author
barry - thats the kind of thing, but it wouldnt be long enough i dont think -that for desks youre sitting at - this would have to come forward about a metre then turn left then have the mount.

it also needs to move fairly freely, i dont want to be unscrewing etc to move it away again

but with the right connections i could possibly put two together

their is a roof joist right above my bed and im wondering if to attach something there so itd 'hang down' - rather than trying to hold the weight upwards ...
A rope cradle with a hoist should do it :) Your macrame any good?
At work we have Ergotron arms .. many designers have 3 or 4 monitors mounted on them as well as a platform for keyboard etc. They sort of counterbalance themselves through a number of springs. Therefore you can stand or sit in front of them. Raise, lower and swing everything out of the way.
Only six months ago we scrapped about 10 or more .. all in pristine condition .. these were close to £1k each. But they do much cheaper versions for single mounts. Highly recommended and built like a Rolls Royce !
