3 minutes not seconds.
Have you checked for Windows Defender updates first Danny?
Question Author
Yes Togo last update was yesterday.
Hmmm perhaps that update is corrupted. If you go into latest updates can you uninstall it? Then see if the scan works and then look for updates again.
Question Author
It has been happening for several days.
3 minutes is probably right for a quick scan
Hmm don't know then Danny. Is Defender showing that firewall and network protection is running? If so I would probably wait and see if a future patch clears the problem. Other than that it may be a restore point to a time when you knew it was running the scan. Does the full scan work. I know it is a pain and takes an hour or so(35mins on my desktop) but it may help.
I was thinking that also Hopkirk, but thought that Danny would know how long it usually takes. Is it showing any error codes Danny? Plus of course after running it does flag up the all clear.
Question Author
I'll try a full scan.
Hopkirk. the scan stops but when I try to close the window I get a message that scan is in progresss.
I wonder if you have a problem on one of the discs which is being scanned. Perhaps an error check might be a good idea.
Question Author
bhg, I'm not a techie and wouldn't know how to run an error check.
Question Author
Just checked and full scan stopped after 4 mins.
Have a read through this Danny....I have almost forgotten w7.
It's simple Danny:
Use Explorer to display your Computer
right-click on a disc you want to check and select "properties", then "tools" and you will find an "error checking" option.
Select that and tick both options.
If it's a system disc it will give you the option to check at restart; other discs will be checked immediately.
It can take a long time but will make sure that all your files are properly readable.

Question Author
Bhg.I don't have explorer;
Danny - yes, you do. Look at Togo's link just above my last reply - it explains it better than me anyway.
You could always stop using Defender by downloading a different free security programme such as Avast. It will automatically switch Defender off.
True Hoppy but, if it is a disc error causing the problem, a different program will have the same problem.
Question Author
Hoppy, I had Avast and they wanted to charge for it
