Why is it much more expensive to buy it for 2 yrs than 1 . i.e. Approx £33 for a year and £99 for 2 years.

Sadly Buenchico has such a downer on Microsoft you can never trust anything he says about them. He often confuses his "opinions" with facts.

In the review of anti virus software in Which Computing recently Windows Defender and Avast free both scored exactly the same score - 71%

AVG Free and panda Free also scored 71%.

The best scoring free product was Sophos Home which scored 78%

And Defender does NOT slow your computer down.

I should also point out when he says about Norton "They're notorious for slowing computers to a crawl" then this sort of "fact" is outdated by about 5 years. Norton is now a totally rewritten product and scored well (78%) in the Which magazine, being just beaten by Kaspesky at 81% and BitDefender (79%) and ESET (79%).

Note also that testing security products is not an exact science and products can score better or worse depending how they are tested and by whom.

Three months back my HP Desktop Computer 'died' and, for the price of what mikey has paid for an AV programme, I bought a re-furbished Lenovo tower which is loaded with Windows7 and came with with Defender.

Having never had any problem with Microsoft Security Essentials which was loaded in the HP, it was my view that Defender was basically an up-dated version of MSE and there was Not any need to pay for an AV programme. Consequently, I am somewhat like Togo and am quite happy to trust my luck with Windows Defender; along with the free edition of Malwarebytes.

Thanks for all the post,s and the reason I posted the question in the first place was because a 30 day to go reminder to me quoted thos prices and on phoning them got a take it or leave it which is exactly what ai intend to do . I shall try Defender. There was not much mention of Malawarebytes.
