Can anyone please offer explanations in plain language as to what is wrong with my ****** computer?  I'm on broadband, and my daughter's boyfriend has just reinstalled windows for me because it's been playing up yet it's still taking ages to do anything (as long as 20 seconds just to go to the next question on this site but not unique to here).

Ctrl Alt Delete...see whats running check it with http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/winmgmt/ .... check also for spywares, defrag and clear your cookies.

Is it just Internet performance that's the problem? Inet performance doesn't usually have all that much to do with the PC itself, with the exception of the above mentioned possibilities (Spyware, Viruses etc).

Try a program like CyberTweak which you can get for free by going here: http://www.cybertweak.co.uk . It's a program that, among other things, adjusts your connection's MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) to a value that is suitable to your connection type (you have to specify your connection, e.g. ADSL, Cable etc).
if all alse fails, ( clean out spyware, cookies, defrag, ctl alt del, ) you can always resort to zero filling your hard drive. this will permanantly eliminate 100% of the info on your hard drive, then reinstall windows and all drivers and you will be good as new. depending on the size of your hard drive it can take several hours to do. i had something slowing my computer down too and could not find the prob. after the zero fill its lightning fast and absolutely no problems.

Have you tried asking your daughter to get a new boyfriend? :-)

If he reinstalled Windows and connected to the internet without having anti-virus software installed, there is a good chance you have a virus or spyware on there already.  It only takes a few minutes.  You need to give more information about your system, but if it is Windows XP, ensure he installs Service Pack 2 before connecting to the internet, and have the Internet Firewall turned on.

Just put your foot through it, it won't fix it but you'll feel alot better afterwards.
