I admit almost complete ignorance about computers, not complete or I wouldn't be asking this question. What do I get if I spend £100 pounds more on a wifi/cellular model than just wifi. In other words what does cellular mean in this context. I'm mainly using my computer for e mail and internet so would16 whatevers be adequate for my needs. Thanks to kindly soul who could explain

Wifi only you will need to be near a wifi signal / hotspot in order to connect to the internet.

Wifi + cellular it will work a bit like a mobile phone does and you can connect anywhere, no need for wifi.
I should add to cheekychops answer, that cellular data (use it anywhere) costs money to use. You put a sim in the ipad and set up a contract with a service provider.
oh and its not possible to upgrade the ipad from wifi only to wifi and cellular so if you are going to go for the cheaper option, be SURE that its what you want.
For what you want 16GB is fine.

I agree with Cheeky.......if you will always be in a WIFI hotspot, home, cafe or hotel, then that is fine BUT if you want to use it outside these areas, then you need to pay the extra £100 for WIFI+celular.

Don't forget, if you go for the cellular you will need to sign up with Vodofone or someone similar and pay for broadband connection.
woofgang has crossed posted with me.
I am like you and not that technically minded, but I bought a mini Ipad for my daughters birthday and it was 16 mgb/wifi only and is perfect for her needs. They are amazing little things and she is delighted with it, the cellular ones just cost you money as the others have said.
for what you think you want it for, 16gb is fine but beware....you may well find that once you have got it, you want to use it for other things and wish you had gone for more memory. Just like computers, tablets not only change how we do things, they change what we do. I had a 16gb ipad1 and started collecting books on it and some fairly big, useful apps, like starmap and shipfinder, a few art ones, and so on. I won't say that i quickly filled it but I did fill it so when i upgraded to a mini I went for the 64gb.
If you mainly want to use your iPad at home (and you have a home broadband connection) then you will be able to get away with a wifi only model.

Cellular means the iPad can work like a mobile phone and get connected virtually anywhere there is a phone mast nearby. If you travel a lot then the cellular version might be useful.

If you want to use it abroad then go for wifi only. Trying to use it to use the internet with roaming charges abround will be very very expensive.

If you do go for wifi only, you may want to go for more storage instead.
A cellular contract will also mean you will need a contract that will cost the same/similar to a mobile phone contract payable monthly.
it depends gromit, my sis went to the US and bought a sim when she got there. It cost 40 bucks and she used it to message me everyday, often many times, for two weeks and for internet use as well. She didn't stream any movies or TV.
O2 do a PAYG prepaid sim.
