After living in this house for nearly three years the broadband/phone people think they have finally found out why our Internet runs so depressingly slowly (0.4 thingies) and it should be fixed in the next 48 hours.

There will be no stopping you then. I do sympathise slow computers are so frustrating.Fingers crossed.

I must have developed the patience of a saint over the last three years. Broadband man said it was the slowest he has ever seen and it's a wonder anything internet-based works in this house.
Gosh I can feel the frustration of that, it's awful when things occasionally run slow on computers but constantly throughout three years...ouch. Hope it's soon fixed for you sherr and you will be zipping along (smile).
Sherr, I feel your pain, literally. I still use dial-up.
No offence Society, but I didn't know anybody used Dial Up still.
Question Author
I will be glad when it is sorted - sick of hearing the boys say that their xboxes are 'lagging' and the constant sighing when they can't watch sky in the back room (that's without himself and his hissy fits when it is really slow).
Did they say why it was running so slow sher? Mine is also slow 0.8 thingies.
sher & Jeza.......I didn't think anyone had a Broadband connection below a download of 2.0 mbps. I reckon that society's 'dial-up' is possibly faster.

Who are your Broadband Providers.?

Al.
Mine is SKY.
I remember dial up.

WWW meant World Wide Wait
Question Author
Sorry - just got on. Phone line is Sky and broadband is Post Office.

Jeza - either the broad man man or the phone line man did an old fashioned test (one that they don't routinely do anymore) and the copper in the wire is broken. It doesn't affect the phone but does affect broadband.
No doub they'll be refunding loads & loads of past payments due to inadequate service provision ?
Question Author
Is fixed, that's made a big difference.
Ta dah!! lol

Our house has 3 floors ( my sons bedroom is a loft conversion) and even with all our routers etc he still struggles with a signal up in his room.
Question Author
I think there is someone who just presses some buttons and increases your Internet when they feel like it - how can a copper wire have been fixed so quickly?
good afternoon sherrardk

from now on - you must keep the hamster well fed, otherwise it will slow down again ;-D
A lot of Broadband faults are often corrected very quickly in the Telephone Exchange. However, unless one is totally with BT. it can become a waiting matter whilst the the Broadband Provider gets BT representatives to put matters right. Hence the reason it is far better to be a full customer with BT. even if it does cost a little bit extra.

Anyway the time has arrived for those who are interested in their Broadband speeds to test them. Try the following site.

http://www.speedtest.net/
I get around 9 thingies....which I am told is quite good....except when the server crashes which it did last week and I had to jump through hoops for orange to get bt to trace fault and fix !! Grrrr
congratulations, may we call u "speedy Gonzales" now ?
Question Author
It's running at a massive 1.76 thingies now! The thing that annoys me is we live a stones throw from an army camp that specialists in communication - bet they get more than 1.76 thingies.
