Just recently bought a 500Gb Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro Ext HD for use as back up. It has two USB plugs, one marked "Power Only" - do I need to use both of these plugs ?
If anybody else has bought one of these, would be interested to know if they use both plugs.

Surely one I'd for the power lead and the other connects it to your PC or Laptop.
if you've just bought it you will have a handbook with it ,what's it say in there ??
I only use the data one in my fairly new pc, but have to use both in my very old one.
I suspect it is something to do with the difference between USB1 (the old style) and USB2 but I'm not sure.

Connected with just the data plug seems perfectly ok.

USB power is limited to 0.5A @ 5V – I suspect that the drive might require more than this (at certain operating parameters); to overcome the issue, the manufacturer has provided a second USB connection (to the host PC – connecting to the 5V and 0V only), allowing a power draw of up to 1A @ 5V.

If during the operation of the drive, you suffer intermittent operation, plug in the second USB connector and see if that fixes the problem.
Same as Hymie. I have two ext HDDs and they both have a double USB plug. The unit works better on both.

Apologies for the delay in answering.
Now running with the two USB plugs, must say it seems to run faster.
Thanks for all the answers.
