I want to hide the LAN icon in the notification area (bottom right of screen).

This is because the computer is never used with a LAN cable and, to the user, this looks like an error indicator because it has a big red cross.

I've done this with right-click -> properties -> customize -> always hide.

However, it keeps coming back.

disable the network connection all together.

goto start > setting > network connections right click on the local area connection and select disable. can be enabled again in future if needed.
or in control panel | my network places | network connections | right click Local Area Connection | properties

on the general tab ... take out the tick(s) from
show icon in notification area
and
notify me .....
and it's gone
