I'm asking this question on behalf of my Dad (82). I have never used a laptop only iPad/ iPhone so can't advise him.
So, he's quite savvy on his laptop but it's connected to the Internet via Ethernet cable. But when he unplugged it to use in another room on his knee, it was saying Not Connected To Internet
Can anyone advise me how I can 'step by step' help him?
(There's no apparent switch/button on lap top to enable WiFi just for information)
Appreciate don't advise. T I A

He has unplugged the cable that connects his router to his laptop. He would need to have wifi installed and a device that is wifi enabled to enable him to use it anywhere.
If he's unplugged it, it's not connected.
If the laptop doesn't have WiFi functionality built in then the cable has to be connected. Or you need to buy a dongle to add WiFi to the laptop and hope the router you are using offers WiFi.
All laptops are wifi enabled. Does he have a wifi router?
You can buy a dongle which will fit in a USB socket on his laptop which will enable him to connect wirelessly to his router.
On some laptops pressing 'F8' button will either turn on or off the wifi connection . So press it and see if he has accidently turned the wifi connection off.
IF he has a wifi router go into settings and select wifi conection. You may need to enter the security code that comes with the router.
nn......
Surely if he had wifi he wouldn't be using an ethernet cable?
Prudie we don't know that yet hence the question. Tech. blog not q&a.
curley can you use your phone on his internet connection? If so the hub is wifi.

Hi. Wow thanks for great response!
Yes, when I'm there, my iPhone connects straight away, because I initially connected to his BTHUB months ago, the reason is, his laptop is in his bedroom (and it's too cold) so he fancied sitting with it on his knee in the lounge but hence... Had to unplug Ethernet cable?
Anyway. Some of these suggestions have given me food for thought... So I shall drive over and have a go....
Thanks peeps. X

Will definitely try the F8 thing!! Didn't know that?

Yes he does have a WiFi router.
Exactly what type of laptop does he have? I suspect the F8 answer may be the solution but it might mean pressing the Fn key AND F8.
On my Toshiba Laptop pressing F8 will turn off the wifi, pressing it a second time turns it back on again. Some computers have a different button to press. There is a symbol on the wifi button that looks like a radio aerial .
Curley just set wifi enable in settings on the lappie. When (if) asked enter the code you did on your phone.
Another point some lappies disable the wifi when an Ethernet cable is plugged in and need to be wifi enabled next time you want wireless.

Thanks guys! Will try everything suggested. (It's a Toshiba). :)
If he has a router that you can connect your iphone to straightaway then he has no need to use a cable - unless as said the wifi button is switched off.
On my laptop it's F2 by the way. On my previous laptop it was a switch elsewhere. You need to give the make/model of laptop really.
