Avast -Threat Has Been Detected

I have a new laptop which I'm still in awe of and not at all as confident on it as I was with my old pc. I keep getting a pop up saying 'threat has been detected' but when I go into Avast it says everything is okay. This happens every 30 seconds or so. Any help in very, very simple terms would be gratefully received - thank you.

Quite interesting Bibblebub.
We run many computers in our house.
The late model ones all have "propriety protection", multi user license with help desk back up for any problem, (not just virus).
The old laptops in my workshop rely on freeware to keep them running, no major problems yet.
Sometimes it relies on the operators IT ability.
If they aren't "computer savvy" I suggest they pay a bit of money and gain some peace of mind.
"A brand new laptop and already they have concerns"?
Gee I hope they don't have major problems in the future.

bibblebub I didn't understand what the false positive option meant so I didn't try it - thank you for the clarification.

You are a legend!
Keep up the good advice to all other computer users.
I'm sure it will help them all!
Have not used Avast free for some time, so I may be talking a load of rubbish here.

I suspect Avast is just telling you how 'good' it is at protecting. Many AV programs use this as a ploy to persuade you how good it is and to buy the full package, however there is normally an option to silence or switch off these notifications. This would not reduce its efficiency.

At present I am using Comodo Security and that's also going through a learning curve with me as it prompts me to clear a program to start or not. Once I've released a program it does not interfere again.
I think you are talking sense SlackAlice.
There are many good "freeware" systems available, but the user needs to know how configure them, and what to ignore.
Some don't, they just want to "surf safely"
A 'false positive' is when an AV application is positive it has found a threat but is mistaken. I am assuming there is an option you have to report this to Avast.
Question Author
There is indeed that option Old Geezer, many thanks and thanks also for all the comments and advice I've had from this thread - big learning curve for me.

"Well said bibblebub you told him".
Wonder who's comment that was.
Jordyboy.
Any other comments about "sarcasm", Jordyboy?
I encountered this issue on a computer recently with AVAST free . To fix it I uninstalled it completely and downloaded and reinstalled it again . The issue didn't return. I used IOBIT Uninstaller 3 free which completely removed all traces of AVAST .
@1ozzy....I am surprised that you are adopting an aggressive attitude when you have been a member of AB for less than a month. I have been a member for slightly longer, but am still treading with caution.

@rsvp...The advise from from galeck could be worth a try. However, personally, I would be looking to remove Avast with Avast's own removal tool.:-
