Hi, The computer I bought just over a year is giving me problems and I am thinking about buying another one. This computer has Windows 7 Pro that I need for my work. I bought this one from Ebay (not a good place when it comes to comp) and it did not come with any software CDs.

Is there any way I can make a copy of operating system? so that I might be able to load this onto the new computer I buy. Because there are computers without operating system quite reasonably priced on Ebuyer. My idea is that why waste something if you can use it. Thanks.

An operating system needs to be installed from the master Windows DVD as it needs to be tailored to the hardware in the computer during install.

All computers have slightly different hardware in them and Windows is tailored during the install to work with that specific hardware.

You cant just copy the Windows code from one PC and expect it to work on another PC.

The other problem is that legally once Windows has been installed on the original PC it cannot then be moved to another PC. This is part of the license agreement for Microsoft "OEM" software used by system builders.

Has your PC got a "Windows" sticker on it showing the serial number of the product (it should be stuck on the outside of the case somewhere)?

If it has not then the person who sold you the PC from ebay has broken the license agreement for Windows OEM software.

It may even be they used a "dodgy" version of Windows.

If you want to put Windows on the new PC you will need to buy the OEM version of Windows 7, which is about £80.

VHG - No, the computer has no sticker apart from one in the front that says Intel Core I3. I knew when I bought it that person was dodgy because he promised to send a disc with it but he did not. Then he promised to send later but he never did. I had already left a feedback for him and realised that I had done what many others probably did. That we left feedback soon after we received the computer and therfeore he had 100% positive rating. Can't do much now and would buy another PC from Ebuyer with proper software installed. Ebuyer had been my trusted place where I have bought quite a few things and they were all perfect. Thanks.
I think you can take the hard drive out of the old pc and install it in your new pc and use the old hard drive as the boot drive.
It should be straightforward.

HC- Thanks, that sounds a possible solution.

That MAY work, it depends how similar the hardware is in the new PC to the old PC.

You could then try to do a Windows repair to see if it tidies it up.

But if the hardware is very different you may find Windows does not activate.
Why do you need W7 Pro? What does it do that no other operating system will do?

Linux may suit your needs and that is free.

Would Linux run my other software like Microsoft office etc?

Or perhaps I can somehow sort the problem with my other PC. It has just started freezing in last couple of weeks. Even when I press Cont-Alt and Del it goes to a black screen and just stays like that until I press power button to re-start. Can I run any repair programme on that?
Not until next year
You certainly can. Are you able to use it at all?

What make/model is it? You should be able to put it back to factory default which means you will lose all your documents and photos - it will be exactly as it was when you bought it.
You need to back everything up first.

Sorry I just went out for couple of hours. Yes I can start it and it works OK. But since last week, it just freezes after about half an hour.

I have a backup system where all of my files are backed up almost every day. I will try what you suggested.
