There is nothing like a leg spinner announcing himself to world cricket and we have seen a startling debut by Abrar Ahmed this morning.
The 24 year-old bespectacled leg spinner has five for 70 at lunch after befuddling England with his unusual grip - flicking the ball off the front of his middle finger – and extracting turn and bounce.
It already feels as though England have misread the pitch. It has spun significantly and Pakistan picked three spinners – England four seamers. The boundaries have been pushed back to stifle the big hitters in England's side and the pitch is a different beast to the flattie in Rawalpindi.
A fascinating morning was dominated by the battle between Abrar and England’s dashers. Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope made rapid 50s reverse sweeping the spinners and England scored quickly again at 5.5 an over but lost wickets. At 180-5 they have gone after the spinners but paid the price.
