History advises that a lot of gladiators volunteered for the arena, and were spared if they fought well, as were their opponents, and many retired to a rich life and old age.
That said, we are not ancient Romans, I would like to think we have progressed in terms of what we think of as acceptable forms of entertainment.
Personally, people hurting each other for fun or money or both, doesn't do it for me, I do believe it is uncivilised, but we do live in a free society, so like many people, I am happy to live with things I do not agree with.

I am intrigued - you are happy to support entertainment where one or more dumb animals are effectively tortured to death for the fun of participants or observers, but you do not support the notion of two consenting adults hurting each other for sport and / or money.

i am appalled by fox hunting and bull fighting, i don't see how that can be excused in a world where animals don't get a chance of survival.
i know the animal kingdom is cruel, but at least they do it for survival, to eat their prey, whilst we hunt the fox across a field till its done to death. Bull fighting is disgusting.

Whenever fox hunting is discussed, someone usually pops up and comments on the carnage left by a fox in a henhouse because they 'kill for fun'.
They don't.
A fox will kill a dozen chickens at once with the intention of taking one home, and burying the rest for future consumption. If disturbed, the fox will carry one carcass away, and abandon the rest.
But in common with all other animals that eat prey, foxes kill for food, and not for 'fun' - a concept it is doubtful they are intelligent enough to grasp.

I think it's old-fashioned and barbaric as well. No doubt the discipline and training is useful, but you can get that in Martial Arts too.
Nowhere near as bad as bloodsport though, where only one side knows it's competing, and the other can't consent.
It's more a shame people still enjoy watching people deliberately try to harm each other. With other sports, danger is a risk- not the intention.
