//"Boxers know the risks involved". Car drivers know the risks involved driving without a seatbelt on but it's still not allowed// Bad analogy. Car drivers run the risk of hurting others, boxers will only ever hurt each other.

// Every sport has a risk of accident. That is not the same as the whole aim being to injure someone. //

Exactly Pixie. The ideal result that every contestant is aiming for in a boxing match is a knockout. You're basically attempting to inflict temporary brain damage on the opponent.

Sometimes that can go wrong and the damage inflicted is permanent, or even fatal.

Whilst it may be true that footballers for example sometimes try to injure their opponents, that is called a foul. It's not actually part of the sport - it's just them being thugs, and they get sent off the pitch for it.

Boxing is unique in this respect.

Most sports have their uniqueness that’s why they are different.
Most “fighting sports” : wrestling, karate, judo, Taekwondo, etc are about to some extent “hurting” “over powering” your opponent
Boxing is not unique in this
//I disagree it just encourages even more violence towards one's fellow man.//

Only aimed at someone willing to accept that violence. The alternative may well aim that violence at innocents.
Agree, Steg, I haven't got that mentality.

There is a high level of skill involved and the training is brutal. Pro boxers fitness levels are astronomical.
You don't hurt each other in Martial arts. They are techniques, but not designed to cause injury during the sport. I have done karate and judo, and the only person ever injured (not by me..) was by mistake.
I broke my hand doing Judo...

You do hurt each other in martial arts, just not when it's used as a fitness thing.

Most,if not all Martial Arts are based on defensive moves and can't be compared to Boxing. In Martial Arts you get points for defending an attack not harming your opponent. Boxing is a horrible outdated 'sport' and along with cage fighting should be banned.

Boxing is a marshal art, and of course you do
*Martial
never seen the atraction watching two blokes trying to knock the other out.. bit like watching f1 racing waiting for crashes.
fender , drivers in f1 don't compete knock people into a crash -that's called demolition derby :-)
I've never classed boxing as a Martial Art, but on referencing, it seems this is quite a contentious subject.
AuntPollyGrey, i know that, but f1 cars do crash into walls flip, or other cars, driver error or car failure of some kind.

Incorrect. Martial arts (except boxing) are about scoring points by executing a successful strike or throw, like fencing or Kendo.
Wrestling and Judo are about executing throws and holds to score points.

Deliberately damaging your opponent is not an inherent part of these sports as it is in boxing.

Most boxing matches are won on points, judged on striking, defence etc

Karate

Even judo, jiu jitsu, wrestling etc ,they use submission holds (inflicting severe pain not tickling)

Then have a look at some MMA (mixed martial arts) were they use several different martial arts together
