I wonder if the Russians can top previous winter opening ceremonies?

ah, I remember the opening ceremony from Albertville 1992, which was a sort of drug-induced dr seuss fantasy - each country was led by a woman in a plastic snow globe and wearing a curved sign with the country's name. and as they marched, the announcers read rhyming couplets of the most cheesy - stuff like “From the land down under with the funky mammalia! Let’s all welcome the team from Australia!”
well, perhaps not quite like that, but you get the idea....

i wonder if anyone will ever answer the question that a couple of us have asked, which is...

-- why do some events take place before the opening ceremony? --

Question Author
Excel, yes ...

It wasn't part of the original plan. It was a scheduling issue.

In other words, they didn't have enough time on the Slopestyle piste to fit in all the events.

So, they had to slip in a qualification heat before the Games begin. It wasn't originally planned that way.

And, as we've seen, it happens at the Summer Games, too.
