Why do religionists (of all flavours) hate this way of thinking so much?
What is wrong with trying to enjoy this one and only life (that we can be certain of) so much?
We all go through our own personal griefs in life, our own personal problems and struggles, but what is so WRONG about enjoying our existence once in a while?
For me its not about 'eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die'. Its more about eat, drink and be merry for today Im alive. And Im currently enjoying been alive...

I will give you a biblical quote “Wine that maketh glad the heart of man”
nailit //Its more about eat, drink and be merry for today Im alive.//

Perfectly put.

Trouble is that if you do what you like doing, you won't be doing what the powers that be want you to do. So they pick the best things in life and make you feel guilty about it.

Then the church offers you solace from your sadness and promises things will get better but you have to wait until you die. It is the ultimate Ponzi scheme where the perpetrator never has to come up with the promised reward.
Not long before we see the village mosque.
God rest ye merry, gentlemen

(and ladies of course)
Don't throw out the baby with the bath water. In their dislike of Christianity, what atheists seem to forget, is that our whole history and culture is based on and around Christianity, in all its forms, and all its negative aspects.
Our respected institutions and structures are all influenced by Christianity, we live and breathe it.
Now with political correctness and rabid secularism, there is a vacuum being created in the realms of spirituality.
The danger is, what will fill this vacuum?
Islam, magic, spiritism? Take your pick.
Nothing will be as rich as Christianity.
Theland, //atheists seem to forget...//

Atheists don't forget. They are well aware that our culture is based on Christianity. Don’t insult our intelligence.
Well said Naomi....why do religionists always think we are the enemy.... Oh yes it's because they think their religion is THE one and only and devine! Husha ma mouth...oh me of liccle faith...rofl.
dunnitall, I guess they take it personally. Daft really.

Don’t worry, Theland. Knowing something about religion if push ever comes to shove I’m on your side... and there are more like me around. Never doubt it. ;o)
Theland - // In their dislike of Christianity, what atheists seem to forget … //

Atheists don't 'dislike Christianity' either - if you try and observe accurately what is around you, you may get more positive responses.
Just responding to OP - you should join our PCC and other church members in the pub occasionally! Now't wrong with enjoying what life offers. Don't know where you got the idea that being C of E (for example) means you can't have fun. We practically keep the local pub open - honestly - and we enjoy being alive. Someone has fed you some rotten ideas, nailit. :0)
I'm a Christian atheist who prefers decent Christians to Leftist ideologues, Theland.
hic, nailit, another scotch before the AB altar.
western aetheists tend to follow the value systems in western society....hence the 10 commandments....doesn't make them Jewish or Christian or anything in between though.
Since Christianity lost its secular power it has relinquished the repellant roles of inquisitor, persecutor and enforcer. Roles eagerly snatched, copied and enhanced even by the zealots of the New Secularism. Early version of this religion was called Stalinism, then in rather more quirky form Nazism, more recently Maoism, but now exists as a rainbow coalition of militant sects called Unite against Fascism, Black Lives Matter etc.

Could actually be called "Korbanism" because what these creeds share is a single-minded commitment to remove people who blcok the p[ath to Paradise.

Korban? Somewhere in the gospel. Wiki:

"korban...is any of a variety of sacrificial offerings described and commanded in the Torah...The most common usages are animal sacrifice, peace offering and ...holocaust."
Vetuste. You sometimes disappoint me, when you direct your considerable intellect and knowledge against the wrong enemies.

Marx, Lenin and Mao, have all contributed to modern liberal thought, a freedom you enjoy - you shouldn’t dismiss it all so lightly. Are you a drinker?
I can’t work out how anyone can attribute encouragement of liberal thought to Marx, Lenin or Mao – unless it's liberal thought for the selected few only. That said, v_e …..you don't disappoint me. Carry on chaps. ;o)

bainbrig, What a pity you felt compelled to add "Are you a drinker?" to your post. Personal slights devalue your opinions instantly.
//Marx, Lenin and Mao, have all contributed to modern liberal thought, a freedom you enjoy - you shouldn’t dismiss it all so lightly. Are you a drinker?//

Let's start with the last bit first, Bainbrig. Damn right I am. Very large Bacardi and coke in one hand as I type with t'other. (I lie, interleaving drink and reply).

But it's possible that drinker VE is better informed or better read than you.

Know nothing about Lenin or Mao, but have read Orwell and Solzhenitsin speaking at further and nearer removes of Stalin's Russia. That's the anecdotal evidence of intelligent and decent men. More especially, on its real history, I've read Robert Conquest's "The Great Terror" which documents the
methods by which Stalin pursued his dream and its human consequences. You're aware of collectivisation (to be repeated by Mao?), the expropriation of the efficient farmers and the ensuing starvation in Russia's bread-basket (echos of Mugabe and the South African regimes war on their class enemies - i.e. the white farmer). ERc etc etc, Bainbrig.

Sir, where did you learn your history?

bainbig;
//Marx, Lenin and Mao, have all contributed to modern liberal thought,//
Of the first two, history has repeatedly shown what disasters their naive ideology has produced, and the last one, Mao Zedong, was the greatest mass murderer in history.
Please explain your extraordinary assertion.
//What a pity you felt compelled to add "Are you a drinker?" to your post//

Not really, Naomi. On my fiftieth birthday one of my colleagues described me on the card from work as "the defiance of science."

Nor did my intemperate pastime stop one of the poisoned dwarf (RIP) Sir Martin Sorrell's local West London surrogates hiring me on an attractive three month contract (became three years) to
...hired to.. write software... or something.

Details vague. It's all water (no - I lie) under the bridge.
