A popular ploy by the learned religious to excuse the unpopular bible parts seems to be that "one must not take certain passage in the bible and take them to be as read".

I'd like someone to explain away the Deuteronomy 21:18 - 21

18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:

19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

It is such a pity people don't really understand the Bible. The old Mosaic law given to Moses is no longer applicable. The law was instigated by God to lead god fearing Jews to Christ. Jesus Christ fulfilled the law and therefore we no longer live under that law. Basically, if we obey the Kingly Law, given by Christ ie. to Love God and to love your neighbour, then that is sufficient for man to live by.

Deuteronomy refers to not a child but a person of knowledgeable age (a glutton and a drunk), who, regardless of repeated discipline and warnings, would not change. This is not unusual even in today's society when rebellious ones are beyond the control of their parents they are "put away".

As to a woman who is raped, if she shouts and screams then she does not have to marry the rapist, but the rapist will be punished. The girl only has to marry the rapist if she does not shout etc., because this would indicate her acceptance. Who is to say that it may have been a ploy on the part of the couple to enable them to get married to spite opposition from parents etc.

With regards to the slave.There are two types of slave. The Hebrew who became a slave because of ill fortune. Then the 7 year law applies here. With regard to the wife and children taken during his servitude only applied if the slave woman was a foreigner taken captive during war. He would not have married a Hebrew woman slave. Also the slave was protected from brutalities.

I could go further into these points but for now this is sufficient for you to go along with.

Well, all I can say is that Hope gives a reason for living. What hope do you have? There is nothing in this world that gives a reason for living. It is a sad world that so many people find that there is no reason for living that they are prepared to commit suicide. What a sad, sad world we live in, at least the Bible gives a hope for a future that will end all man's problems.

You obviously don't read the whole comment. I was referring to those poor people who feel there is no reason to live that they commit suicide. I have plenty of reasons for living, my faith, my family, my general outlook on life. But there are many, even as young as 10, who feel there is no reason to continue living.

I certainly don't need your sympathyy!!
idiosyncrasy, if you need death as a reason to live, then I pity you, I am an atheist and I have very many reasons for living and I enjoy my life.
Those that commit suicide have issues far greater than any fake God can help with and I bet most of them are also religious.
There are no real reasons for living save those we choose for ourselves. If there was no life on this planet no one would be there to worry about it.

Ratter@ Did you not read my comment to Naomi? What a narrow minded lot you are!! I have every reason to live, I don't want to die to enjoy life!! But there are many, many people who don't have a reason to live and welcome death.
Naomi@ No, I am not waiting to die. I do not want to die. Can you not get it into your head - I love life and enjoy it. I have not got good health and it restricts me from doing a lot to things, but that does not mean I want to finish my life. The more I read your comments, I am beginning to think you are of limited intelligence!!

From what you say, I get the impression that you think no one of a religious persuasion ever commits suicide. That's not true, is it?

Vulcan@ We all die, I accept that fact. A better life - don't we all want that? Who of us can honestly say that we don't want a better life, a life without disease, poverty, war, crime & violence. In today's world that is all we get no matter how much we try to alter it. Governments come and go, they make promises they cannot keep. Animals live and die, that too is a fact of life, but they don't expect a different kind of life. What is their purpose in life? Who knows? But they were created for a purpose - you only have to watch the nature programmes on TV to see that.

Naomi@ I am not saying non religious people are the only ones to commit suicide. It happens in all areas of life, rich, poor, intelligent, unintelligent, you name it. My point is that people are so unhappy and/or can't cope with the life they lead that they want to end it - they can find no reason for living.

Some people .... and some of them are religious people, so that doesn't resolve their problems.

I think you must have seen it in its entirety over and over again on these pages. It seems to be the main pillar of support for atheists lacking intellectual dialogue.

Depends on their religious upbringing etc. Todays society with its "keep up with Jones'" /must have/materialistic attitude is too much for many people to contend with. The media urges people to "buy this and you will be successful", more and more television adverts show that you have to have the latest technology etc to be successful and for many, the ever increasing competition in the work place and in the school room, leads to mental problems. They then feel that the only way out is to "end it all".
