According to believers of the Mayan Calendar, the world might end at midnight on 21st December 2012.
Will you be having a party to say farewell to all and sundry, before putting your head between your legs and kissing your ass goodbye?
Or will you plan now to take out a massive loan from the bank, and live it up for the next two months?
Should be a great party though.

You think so, have you ever attended court either as spectator or as participant? It can certainly prove to be an eye-opening experience, one that can broaden your outlook and aid you to appreciate that a system of law is an indispensable feature of society as we know it.
Goodlife, Beso's right. You have witnessed nothing and you have evidence of nothing, so it's silly to talk about courts of law.

//Sectarian religionists in the past persuaded themselves that the destruction of the sun, moon, stars and earth was at hand, and did many foolish things that brought ridicule upon them and made the subject of the end of the world one that provoked a smile of incredulity. //

Yes indeed. How many times have Jehovah's Witnesses predicted the end of the world? And them true Christians too. Tut!
Is there no definitive answer on this? I need to know because I don't want to be wasting my money on presents that won't be opened.
And I'll stop stocking up on sprouts now!

Only that you appear not to know what a calendar is...
Sandy, open them on the morning of the 21st then re-wrap them on the 22nd.
These are a few of the predictions the Jehovah's Witnesses published, in chronological order. I trust their predictions just as far as I trust the Mayans.

1877: Christ's kingdom would hold full sway over the earth in 1914; the Jews, as a people, would be restored to God's favour; the "saints" would be carried to heaven.
1891: 1914 would be "the farthest limit of the rule of imperfect men."
1904: "World-wide anarchy" would follow the end of the Gentile Times in 1914.
1916: World War I would terminate in Armageddon and the rapture of the "saints".
1917: In 1918, Christendom would go down as a system to oblivion and be succeeded by revolutionary governments. God would "destroy the churches wholesale and the church members by the millions." Church members would "perish by the sword of war, revolution and anarchy." The dead would lie unburied. In 1920 all earthly governments would disappear, with worldwide anarchy prevailing.
1920: Messiah's kingdom would be established in 1925 and bring worldwide peace. God would begin restoring the earth. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and other faithful patriarchs would be resurrected to perfect human life and be made princes and rulers, the visible representatives of the New Order on earth. Those who showed themselves obedient to God would never die.
1922: The anti-typical "jubilee" that would mark God's intervention in earthly affairs would take place "probably the fall" of 1925.
1924: God's restoration of Earth would begin "shortly after" October 1, 1925. Jerusalem would be made the world's capital. Resurrected "princes" such as Abel, Noah, Moses and John the Baptist would give instructions to their subjects around the world by radio, and airplanes would transport people to and from Jerusalem from all parts of the globe in just "a few hours".
1938: In 1938, Armageddon was too close for marriage or child bearing.
1941: There were only "months" remaining until Armageddon.
1942: Armageddon was "immediately before us."
1966: It would be 6000 years since man's creation in the autumn of 1975 and it would be "appropriate" for Christ's thousand-year reign to begin at that time. Time was "running out, no question about that." The "immediate future" was "certain to be filled with climactic events ... within a few years at most", the final parts of Bible prophecy relating to the "last days" would undergo fulfilment as Christ's reign began.
1968: No one could say "with certainty" that the battle of Armageddon would begin in 1975, but time was "running out rapidly" with "earthshaking events" soon to take place. In March 1968 there was a "short period of time left", with "only about ninety months left before 6000 years of man's existence on earth is completed".
1969: Human existence would not last long enough for young people to grow old; the world system would end "in a few years." Young Witnesses were told not to bother pursuing tertiary education for this reason.
1974: There was just a "short time remaining before the wicked world's end" and Witnesses were commended for selling their homes and property to "finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service."
1984: There were "many indications" that "the end" was closer than the end of the 20th century.
Good list Graham

Kind of highlights the sheer uselessness of religious prophecy really....
I especially like the 1969 one encouraging young Witnesses not to bother with education.

No one can predict the end of the world. The Bible gives us signs to look for and these have been happening since 1914.

Any one who makes predictions is not following the Bible.

The Bible tells us "no one knows the day or the hour" so manmade predictions are completely false.

But know this, one day will be the "last" day.
At least no one will be able to say, "I didn't know".
Oh, stop being so flipping miserable Goodlife!
Markrae - “... Where has the notion come from that there are no Mayans today?...”

Quite right. My wife and I recently met several Maya when sightseeing in Mexico. And jolly nice people they were too.
Goodlife - “... But know this, one day will be the "last" day. At least no one will be able to say, "I didn't know...”

You're right. One day will be the last. The 'last' day for this earth will be when the sun's resources of hydrogen are all but exhausted and it expands into a red giant star, swallowing all of the inner planets in our solar system including the Earth. Fortunately, this won't happen for about five billion years.

Science eh?
//Oh, stop being so flipping miserable //

Naomi-Did you know happiness cannot lie dormant; it must be expressed. Happiness must affect you or someone else. Have you kept your happiness inactive? Have you kept it asleep? Are you the miser type who prefers to be unhappy and miserable, never giving to anyone else of that which you have learned? Even if you were to gather all the knowledge of the world into your mind, it would be useless if you never gave it out. In time it would be forgotten, and your knowledge would die with you. Why get knowledge if you are not going to use it? Real Christians receive knowledge from God. They are taught of Jehovah through his Word, and their happiness comes by telling others.
Goodlife, ‘no’ to all your questions – and, never fear, my knowledge will not die with me - it is used well.

//their happiness comes by telling others.//

…. regardless of the fact that you frighten the wits out of the gullible, and bore the pants off the not so gullible. How selfish!

You call yourself ‘Goodlife’, but you do nothing but dwell on doom, death, destruction, and misery. Doesn’t sound so good to me.
No Naomi- The first one to abuse this ability and freedom of choice was none other than the one who became Satan the Devil. He chose to follow selfish desire; this gave birth to the sin of rebellion, which will lead eventually to his destruction, annihilation. (John 8:44 ) Adam and Eve, the antediluvians in the days of Noah, the angels that did not keep their original position, Nimrod and his crowd after the Flood, the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah and a host of others through the centuries down to our day—these have chosen to follow the example of Satan the Devil by making selfish, wrong and bad choices.
There you go again. What are you trying to do? Scare people into submission?

Why don't you cheer up and tell us something interesting about your religion?
Goodife try reading some books written for adults, the scales will fall from your eyes.
No,Naomi- Why not look at it this way: Every family has a personality. This isn’t formed by any one person, but each one contributes something to the family’s composite personality. What is your family like? Is your home a warm, cheerful place? Do you enjoy one another, have interesting conversations at mealtimes, find pleasure in doing things together and for one another? Or do you each go your separate way, with little or no interest in one another? Which way would you prefer it to be?
It’s easy to blame others if things aren’t the way you would like them to be. But before complaining, why not first ask: “What do I myself contribute to my spirit.
Often bored people simply fail to see the value of the things.

jomifl- You want to happy or sad read Rev 1:3 and see By prophetic pictures, the Bible book Revelation, unveils developments that climax in the dawning of an age of eternal happiness for humanity.
