What would make you lose your faith – or what caused you to lose it?

Does anyone watch Four Thought TV? I watch it when I’m cooking dinner. It’s a five minute slot at the end of the 7pm Channel 4 news, described by the programme makers as a “series of highly personal short films, broadcast daily, reflecting on a broad range of religious and ethical issues, and aspects of our spiritual lives. These films challenge some traditional views, providing a platform for both scepticism and devout religious beliefs.”

This week’s topic is ‘Reasons for losing your faith.’ Last night a Science teacher, a former Muslim, said when he was at school, he could never accept that the non-Muslim children were going to hell, but the defining moment came for him when he ate bacon for the first time and realised that he was responsible for leading his own life.

Tonight we had a Roman Catholic who, during his childhood, had held great affection for a particular priest, and had held him in very high regard, only to discover years later that the priest had been a paedophile.

So, what would make you lose your faith – or what caused you to lose it?

<< if this is still disturbing you...>>
There is only one contributor to this thread who is not disturbed by the idea of fifty year old men having sex with nine year old girls.
And he is preaching to us?
There is clearly a difference between marrying and having sex but I am sure you are not bothered about that. And we all know where and who are the most getting pregnant making us teenage capital of the world. The only difference is that majority of them do not know who did it. I am not disturbed by that either.

Let me know how many of them are Muslims.
Did it not occur to you, keyplus, that these children are victims of rape? Children are NOT promiscuous.
And don't forget to read relation between column 4 and 5.
Unbelievable, keyplus.
Unless I've missed it there are no girls from the UK on that list. Most of them raped, as very young children, some of it incest. Father 'unknown' means nothing if you're a victim of rape. Not everyone knows their attackers.

I think you're a bit sick keyplus. I'm actually appalled...
I agree and he is rapidly losing the plot - are there such things as Jehovah Muslim Witnesses, as he could qualify - i he continues the personal insults then we know where he will end up as to AB

For me, I go back to Boxie's "!we went to Sunday School because it was expected of us, not out of any faith conviction" and add Church to that as well as being bored rigid by the Bible when, at an early age, I realised that it was fiction, albeit a very good document to explain the unexplainable in the past, as well as lay down some basis of Abrahamic religions morals and ethics.

And as life progresses, the hypocrisy in all faiths and the way they present themselves make me even more despondent. The only one that I have a modicum for respect for is Quakerism for they at least allow you to think and contemplate, and that's no bad thing.
The Muslims probably hush-hushed theirs by taking them out of society - most likely in a not so pleasant way - given the lack of full freedom of information in their culture.
>>The only difference is that majority of them do not know who did it. I am not disturbed by that either<<

OMG, I could weep. Ummm I echo your sentiments exactly.
As the nationality of the girls is often given, rather than their names or religion, I think it is difficult to decide just how many Muslim girls are in that unfortunate list.

I think 1 definitely, 3 possibly and probably many more.
But it's like he's saying that child rape victims are somehow promiscuous.
Ummmm I thought you were aware that in Islam the "second" class woman is responsible for most things. A female who is raped is responsible because she was not accompanied.

It appears the only woman of any repute is the mother.

Why you all tolerate this "man" escapes me.
Because we do attempt pluralism, Stevee, but when they start to throw insults around then, "Whaaccck" the Mods/Ed descend from AB Heaven
This picture breaks my heart.

Her fault according to some on here.
DT I am all for open, honest debate, even raging argument but to me there is a line in the dirt.
I can sympathise with you, Stevee, a good guide though is the Site Rules and you have the freedom to ping report button.....keyplus has come close this evening for insults and plain inaneness (is that a word?) and it's not even williness as we call for over on the Apotheosic thread.
I stopped believing in Father Xmas and the tooth fairy when I was about 7. I believe God fits in the same category and began to question 'his' existence and the bible stories during confirmation classes and am now a confirmed atheist. But for some reason so many people continue to believe this manmade claptrap. Read Christopher Hitchins for enlightenment.
Oh we have:-)
Keyplus argues for puberty being the defining moment - sorry I do not accept that, as girls or boys achieving this are 98%(?) of the time still too immature for marriage. Also I was rather revolted by the whole concept in Saudi.

My agent is a good man, one of four brothers who father was an advisor to the King, he is the youngest and he with his eldest brother run a very substantial empire, one with a reputation for being one of the most modern and best employers in the Kingdom. However, Brother 2 decided to take a second wife - a 13 year old Tunisian girl (when he was 48) - that is not love and compassion - that girl was to become his sex toy.

Disgusting and should not be permitted.

Youngest brother was abhorred by this as well and has remained with only the one wife.
