Is there such a thing? If a relationship starts out on a platonic footing, is it possible for a man and a woman to maintain a friendship indefinitely on that basis, or is it inevitable that after time, the intentions of one or the other, or both, will change?

But do you think they might secretly fancy you, Lottie? What I'm saying is whilst we might see a friendship as platonic, it doesn't necessarily remain platonic from the other person's point of view - even though it started out that way.

I've not read the whole thread - just the question. Yes it is possible for two people to be purely platonic. In my case, I had a very good friend for 10 years or so. We actually lived together after about 8 years and for about 6 weeks, we became a couple. We decided that partners didn't work and never would, but friends did. He is still one of my closest friends today and the person to whom I know I can always turn and we are always there for each other. I love him dearly, but in a purely platonic way. He has met my BF and my BF knows our past - it is no problem.
Like barmaid, I haven't read the thread, so I don't know what the consensus is but here's my answer.
Chris Rock (American comedian) says 'women have platonic man friends - men don't have platonic woman friends, we have just women we haven't f***** yet'., and at the risk of making us sound like animals, I'm afraid it's pretty much true.
Barmaid has a great friendship with a man, but the key thing is AFTER they were a couple. If that coupling had never happened, he'd pretty much still be wanting to jump into bed with you.

Quite sure, Naomi !
I think age and maturity have a lot to do with this. I am happily married and have several friends who are female. Some of them are attractive, but I don't fancy them.

Some males (generally the more immature ones) will only see women as 'things' they need to $hag. If you value friendship, then it is very easy to have a platonic relationship.
I always try and become friends with women. You never know...

:-)
This is a difficult question - I don't think a man and woman can maintain a platonic relationship for long unless they're not good looking or fit. In my experience the males I do know are simply acquintances - nothing more, not interested in anything personal just the basic chat and laugh. Even have to keep away from the sexual inneunedos as inevitably anything more than that leads to them wanting more and generally thats the end of the relationship as I have to tell them 'to keep it in their pants, not interested.' And they still don't get it - it is really frustrating.

I think that a Woman can generally get who she wants - even the married one's (may not be permanent, just talking about sexually) as men are so easy and so sad. Their are only probably 1% of men who may be difficult? But its not really hard for a woman. A person has to know their limitations - that's what it is all about?
You are probably right OEV. Age and Maturity - that's me. We tend to see people as people and look past the fanciable bit. The friendship between me and my two good male friends is purely based on friendship, like minds complete trust. In my own case though that excludes Daniel Craig. I wouldn't want him a just a friend!! ;o)
Seadragon. Not all men are as you describe. I can talk about anything with my two good male friends, anything at all, much the same as I can with my closest female friends. And, whilst I may not be a raving beauty or 'fit', I don't think I am that bad looking!! ;o)
lofty....then they are g.a.y...............;-)
Most definitely not!!
