Hi All,

Do you think there are differences between the North and South then? If you do think there are differences, what do you like about those differences? Does anyone take the stereotypes that we give each other seriously? Do you think it's all just a bit of joke that we poke fun at each other or do you think there's a serious element to it all?

(And if anyone can tell me what a stuttie (sp?!) is I'd really appreciate it!)

Cheers
China

My local has just started selling gravy..it's pants.

The curry sauce is ok, although southern chippys have been serving that for years, it would seem.

I had never tried gravy on chips until I moved to Manchester in the mid 80's. It was like an epiphany. Never again would I tarnish my chips with mayonaise or tommy sauce. The biggest wrench I had moving back down south was the gravy issue.

And never again hearing the term 'mithered'.

FFS... 'mithered'??

Is there a north to south translation book around here anywhere?! ;0)
I reckon we have a beautiful range of language on this island, CD.

I for one refuse to believe that language barriers started with the 'influx' of Polish people, in fact immigration at all!

The funniest thing I have ever seen was at Mr Pippas last Christmas do at work. There he was with two of his best workmates ~ one a Geordie and the other a Scot. Mr Pippa has a typical East Surrey accent (not posh, not slovenly).

After each sentence spoken, one or the other was saying ''eh??'' it was almost like United Nations..
Gravy? on chips?? with cod in batter??? no! no!! no!!!

One has it served with a little salt and vinegar, and a slice of lemon. The Fat Friar, award winning real chippy ;) xxx
Mithered= bothered

For example, I can't be mithered or stop mithering me.
Aaaah yes..but with a pudding or pie..yummy! as has already been mentioned, with fish & chips mushy peas is a must.

I didn't see much cod in Manchester. I think the fish of choice was haddock.

I also sampled black peas (rather lie pease pudding..only black) and meat & tater pie with red cabbage or beetroot.
Chippy Tea Chippy Tea I want a Chippy Tea

Sorry CD, you'll have to listen later.

Agreed Pip! I love it.

I remember the first time my ex called me 'mardy.'

Having just stomped around stropping about something I got told to 'Stop being so mardy' I think my reaction wa something like 'Are you calling me a b1tch?!' I was in absolute shock and thought I'd been really insulted!

That and my house mate telling me I need to try a stottie last night and then bursting out laughing at me as I asked if that was some sort of cocktail... and she wouldn't tell me what it was! Wench.

Internet connection still pants at home! :0(
wotz blathered mean.....boo........hic!

btw... I thought Harry Ramsdens was the first official chippy to open so maybe if anyones been there recently, they could settle the gravy debate.
LOL CD.. I remember my first week at work up there, I said something and was answered with ''Oh, what are you like?''

I replied with ''Errrrr..5'2, blonde and very friendly''.

I also got supremely looked down on in Derby when I asked the pub if they had any mayo for my chips after rather loudly (and slightly panicky) refusing the gravy...

Now if ever I received a whitering look it was that day!
