I also found his default sneer hard to live with.

To an extent that is true.

It is an entertainment show, and part of the entertainment is retaining the more nonsensical candidates, to continue being ridiculous, and generate more gossip and media attention, which maintains viewing figures.

Were it an actual recruitment process, rather than an entertainment show, it's doubtful if the Sikh contestant would have got past the initial interview, along with the recenty lost, and un-mourned, ex-doctor.
