fender: "imagine if we were land locked how worse it would be" - yes thank gawd for the Channel but our main enemy is our own 5C who moan about the numbers but oppose any attempts at fixing it.
ToraToraTora, iv thought the same thing, makes me wonder if they actually live in the uk, or are so rich that it has no effect them or there families or friends.
No, it's not good down south I do wonder how long it will be before the South separates itself from the Metropolitan elite States.

What people who champion free movement can never answer is how the infrastructure is changed to accommodate them. It can take decades to create power stations, hospitals, roads, houses etc.
Hopfully (if &) when open house stops here, economic migrants will be content to line up on the French coast, and the French can then start serious efforts to solve the consequnces of the EU open house policy that the French are implementing and creating for themselves.
I think the West (not necessarily combined) needs a cohesive immigration programme. Most Western countries are aging and that will prove a problem for both growth and supporting the ever growing retirees.

The programme needs to spell out how the infrastructure, numbers and integration will be done. We need large numbers of genuine immigrants but we need to be careful not just to drain poor countries of their educated, indeed we need manual labour too but they must be able to support themselves. In addition it needs to be made clear getting a right to live and work here does not include the family (Apart from kids before the pedantic start).

To be fair to those coming the Illegals should then be dealt with robustly, i.e. Jailed immediately and deported once we find where they come from. If they refuse to say where they are from detained permanently.

YMB: "I think the West (not necessarily combined) needs a cohesive immigration programme. " - we had a great one in the 19th century, we simply invaded them and civilised them in their own country. Saved them all this tedious mucking about trying to get a better life, we delivered it to them!

We are still paying for doing so. :-(
But this now needs to be a two way thing as immigration will be an important part of our future given the population growing older becoming the larger part.

But of course it must be controlled, not only for the sake of those living here but also for those coming here.
