Whether you fall into the group classified as ‘at risk’, or are over 70 and advised to remain at home, or younger and fit but requested to abandon your social life, will you comply - and if not why not?

Me? I think we are duty bound.

Of course we will comply, as you rightly say Naomi we feel we are ALL duty bound to do so. Chillidoubt must feel like banging his head against the wall with some of the responses here. It’s not much to ask to put your social life on hold for a few months is it? Better that than catch this virus or continue the spread of it. I despair at times...

I’m telling you what we’ve been told.
You don’t want to be informed, don’t read the thread.
Oh well Chilli, you did your best... x
Is it possible to stay at home for 12 week without starving to death ?

You did watch the Sky News report I posted earlier, right?
Harsh realities Chilldoubt but better to open your eyes to the realities than the actual scare mongering.

That sky news link is very eye opening, thank you for that.

I feel I am taking it seriously. I'm helping those who are high risk and trying to give everyone a lot of space. Also shopping in the very early hours and not taking more than what those who are asking me to shop actually need.

I do feel bad though, seemingly taking two of things when one is for me or maybe both are for other people.

And yet yesterday you thought it was acceptable for people to stockpile and sell.
It's vital to recognise, though, that while this virus did originate in China, that doesn't mean that the Chinese "started it". The virus emerged naturally, from natural sources, and such natural sources can happen anywhere, and indeed have. We can't be complacent about this and me certainly mustn't allow that to leak into racism.

the latest science I can find, from a couple of days ago, suggests it may have come from bats but there's no evidence of direct transmission so it may have come via some intermediary. It may not even have been a disease among bats, but only when it became attached to humans.

This isn't necessariy an "OMG, Chinese all eat diseased bats" scenario.

We know - but this one didn't emerge from 'anywhere'. It emerged from China.
No it won’t be a disease in bats. Most of these viruses are harmless to animals.
Chill, don't waste your efforts, sadly lots of people only see a problem when its on their doorstep, then their screaming, shouting and blaming everyone else, and this is why the virus will take many. Just a few weeks ago anyone who mentioned the virus was shot down as scare mongering, their attitude was, it will all blow over in no time at all, well that is what it as been doing in a sense, blowing our way, and its here to stay, until we change our way. You won't stop someone speeding in a car / bike until they end up with most of their bones broken, lost limbs, or crippled for the rest of their life. all the best at work!
This little chap has been fingered as a carrier

Presumably they don’t swallow them whole :-)

until we change our way.

What cobblers, we have to go shopping.
Fine.
Ed, please remove all my posts.
Seriously.
I'd far rather people were too scared than not scared enough.

This pandemic is currently on a trajectory outpacing that of 2009 Swine Flu, and that was responsible for 200,000 deaths globally at least on a far lower death rate. We *must* take warnings seriously to ensure that this doesn't happen.
