Can i get a smartphone with inbuilt sat nav to save having to buy both ?

Yes but it will not be as good as a proper sat-nav.

Yes you can but remember when you have the smartphone sat nav on it is using up part of your data allowance, not sure how much it uses sure somebody will inform you. There are sat nav apps that you can download onto a smartphone too.

and route choices (A to B) = 4 in 1.
I recently downloaded NAVFREE for using with my Android phone. This downloads the maps at installation so you don't have to use any of your data allowance but just have the GPS switched on. It got me to Portsmouth and then from Caen to Brittany. It can get a little bit confused sometimes but hey IT'S FREE.
I thought they were all capable of sat nav functionality. (Not that I could ever get mine to work, but it probably needs data link I guess.)
Is Sat-Nav really necessary when this is available ? :-

Does it talk to you in the car whilst you drive ?
No O-G , it doesn't. However, I don't think it takes you down farm tracks as Sat-Nav is known to.
