I had my biological fathers surname until I was 17 then when my mum married again I started using my step-fathers surname but didnt change it by deed poll. I have now been known as my step-fathers surname for 10 years and I'm wondering if when I get married I will need to take my vows using my old name or new one. Anyone know? Thanks x

If you haven't changed your name by deed poll, you must get married using the name on your birth certificate.

You don't need a deed poll! Just a statutory declaration - as you have already been known by this name for years, there should be no problem. Check it out at the CAB or do you have a solicitor locally who has a free advice evening? In fact you can do it online for just a few pounds, you just have to declare you wish to be known by the new name, that's all.

Good luck!

Out of curiosity, how do the tax office, bank and employer know you? I would assume by your original name.

I changed my name by deed poll over 15 years ago. When I got married last year I couldn't find the document and didn't know which solicitors I used. The registrar simply put on the wedding documents "Mr X formerly known as Mr Y".

Felt like Symbol/Prince or whatever he is known as know!

I think you should get married in the name that you feel you are.

The forms can be filled out according to taste.
