credit/debit cards, as long as you don't take out cash in dribs and drabs and get hit for the minimum fee on less cash than it will cover.

Travellers cheques will cost you a lot although they do have the advantage (and it's the only one) of being replaceable if lost.
cash and a credit card

Oh and in Madree - they have muggers who specialise on Brits. They are in plain clothes, flash a card with politheea on it and demand to inspect your money and credit cards and passport. and then tell you to collect the passport or credit card down the local nick - and when you pitch up at the calle de legoncitos, you are particularly well placed to report the mugging. The tube stop is Opera by the way.

I said in expasperation we better settle this now down the nick and he said ok ok i am geeving you it all back, but didnt and palmed about 60. so I sort of knew there was something odd and memorised the number plate as they drew off - white merc. He had read out my credit card number aloud before giving it back and since I can memorise a 12 digit number I thought he might be, or the gfella in the back. SO I cancelled all my cards and lived on nothing for three days until my flight

They sport South African flag lapel badges which I think is how they show they're crooks to each other. Madrid sorry Madree tourist police not interested, as it would decrease the flow of tourists to said city but did sort of idly wonder how I knew it was the SA flag. I thought they would get heated up over impersonating police but they couldnt give a t+ss is putting it lightly.

you have been warned ! But that doesnt mean dont go.....

calle atocha by the Gabriel Laziano museum.
