""On the point about eyesight, I'm finding I have to wear spectacles for the first time in years… so I'm inclined to think that's very, very plausible"

No significant studies done but:
// In March 2020, researchers writing in the Ocular Immunology and Inflammation journal said that, to their understanding, “there have been anecdotal reports of ocular infection” stemming from transmission of COVID-19…..While there has not yet been significant study of the effects of COVID-19 in the eyes and vision of human patients, other forms of coronavirus “have been known to cause various ocular infections in animals.” Cats, rats, and mice that were infected with coronavirus developed optic neuritis, retinitis, anterior uveitis, and conjunctivitis. The researchers writing the article suggested that the longer COVID-19 goes without treatment, the more likely it is that patients will develop infection of the eye tissue as a result of the virus.//

Having watched DCs press briefing he did not say he drove just to check his eyesight - he said he was not sure if he was over his illness one of the symptoms of which was his eyesight being affected but he felt he was better and so they decided to do the test drive - from which I understand that he felt ok and therefore his eyes were, which was proven by the test drive.
naomi - I am perfectly willing to accept that Mr Cummings' vision may have been affected by the virus symptoms he may or may not have been exhibiting.
What I am not willing to accept is that any sane individual who is worried that his eyesight may be compromised to the point where it endangers his wife and child if he drives his car, then drives his car on a thirty-mile round trip, with his wife and child in the car, to 'test his eyesight' for the drive home.
There is a well known phrase - "You couldn't make it up … "
Clearly Mr Cummings could, and did.
