It's ugly and a blot on the landscape. So there.

More statement than art. I love this kinda 'dotted around the landscape thing', but the angel?????? Always afraid it'll fall over.

And what kind of symbol is it supposed to be?

In my opinion it shows that the people of Gateshead have many talents.  I know it looks a little strange but it has meaning.
It depends which way you are going when you see it..........
I thought it looked much better wearing the Toon top!! ;o)
I really like The Angel of the North.  It's beautiful and I love the scale of it.  There are lots of these bits and pieces of art appearing all around the country.  If you drive from Edinburgh to Glasgow (or indeed, vice versa) on the motorway, you can see a wire-form horse; three heads made of some sort of corrugated iron, and what is locally known as the "telly tubbie horn".  I think they brighten up the journey a lot.  The wire horse is beautiful at night when it's lit up.
Mowbray -not sure why it demonstrates the talents of the people of Gateshead -the artist Anthony Gormley was born and lives in London

You've got a point Inferno, but the tools that were used where from Gateshead. I am also certain that it was made here in Gateshead too - enough said! :-)

Scotland stuff is mainly that ol genius David Mach. I especially like the lego heads. you can only make it out if you turn your head real sharp as you go past.
I love it .
I also loved being able to actually sit on it's feet.
I was really disappointed when I saw it 'in the flesh'. It was far smaller and less imposing than I'd expectecd it to be. It's no way near as impressive as the B of the Bang.
I thought that it was a bit on junk when I saw the photos, but in the flesh it is beautiful. I love the fact that it right by the motorway in an industrial setting
only seen it in photo's but i'm sorry i think it's awful.  And i think it's a shame because it's a fantastic idea.

Its horrid, looks like an old fashioned plane to me!

Before it was actually built (design stages) I thought it was ugly but I now think it is beautiful in a strange sort of way.

I only pass it very rarely but I love the way it suddenly appears in the distance all big and in your face just standing there defying the elements.

We had to take our dog to a doggy hospital near there and took the opportunity to 'sit on it's feet' and read about the construction process and can tell joeyshablido that the foundations go deep into the earth so no danger of falling over.  For more info on the founds. follow this link http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/angel/data.htm (hope I've done that right).

One just thinks..welding..bolts...big wing...big wind...

Like it.

Below the structure are massive concrete piles 22 metres deep anchoring it to the solid rock beneath

i really like it. i think its like the two "guards" either side of the river in the first lord of the rings. sorry, i dont know why. i also really like the red brick train near durham. fantastic!
I also like the brick train (by David Mach I think) but just in case somebody wants to view it, it's actually just outside Darlington on the A66 near Morrisons.
