I'm 40 and I know your eyes will change but are my symptoms normal? I have trouble focussing. Reading has become hard work and the letters seem to jump about. My eyes hurt when I look at the PC screen and TV even though I have turned the brightness right down. I have Ulcerative Colitis and am worried that I may have an eye problem which may get worse if left. I had an eye test recently which was normal, and have just changed my glasses. Any thoughts?

What treatment are you receiving for your ulcerative colitis? If you're only only on the 'first step' drugs (aminosalicylates) I'm unaware of any known side effects affecting vision (but headaches are a possible side effect, so it's not totally impossible that vision might be affected). If you've been moved onto steroids (particularly for a prolonged period) both cataracts and glaucoma are known (but fairly rare) side effects.

Speak to your GP and ask if you can be referred to a hospital eye specialist. (There's probably nothing to be greatly concerned about but why take chances?).

Chris
About 10-15% of people suffering from ulcerative colitis, suffer eye problems ..iritis, conjunctivitis and episcleritis.....the reason is unknown but thought to be due to an auto immune reaction.
See you GP as this can be "nipped in the bud" at an early stage.
