How many squares of 3 inches by 3 inches can be cut from a rectangular strip of paper (or cardboard) that is 2 yards wide by 14  2/3( fourteen and two thirds)  feet long ?

I make it 1392 leaving a strip 2 yards by 2 inches over

2 yards is 72 inches  x  14 2/3 feet ( 176") results in 12672 square inches and if you divide this by 3"x3" (9 square inches) the answer should be 1408 pieces.

I feel 1392 is the correct ans as hotrocker explains, a 2" wide strip will remain from which no more 3" squares can be cut.

Thanks for the above, but I have a feeling that there is a trick involved in this question. I haven't a clue as to what though -  that's the problem.
The answer is 1. When you have cut the first square the paper no longer measures 2 yards by 14 2/3 feet.
