England...according to the Encyclop�dia Britannica.
Mind you, The Oxford English Dictionary seems to suggest there may well be a connection with Turkey!

Just to confuse more...Bridge was derived from the Russian whist called Biritch
Not strictly so, Pea Pod. The OED suggests a possible Levantine origin and says the origin of the Russian biritch is unknown. In the Western world, bridge seems definitely to be a development of whist and - back to the Britannica - that (quote) "originated in 17th century England."
