Looks like Dave is getting desperate. Why should it be necessary to extend the deadline for registration?

It explains why the deadline may be extended in your link.

The website for registering crashed and left many unable to register.

Why do the Brexitters fear legitimate voters being able to register?

The higher the turnout the better, in terms of accurately gauging the electorates true view. Most MEPs are elected on a 43% turnout. They are Euroskeptics because the only people voting are those wanting to protest at the EU.

If everyone votes (or a high turnout) and not just the protest voters, then that could nullify the sKeptics. Which is why they desperately want to deny the vote to as many people as possible.
If you fail to register in time for a general election then the deadline isn't extended.

A crashing website is hardly an excuse when it crashed because many couldn't get around to registering well beforehand.

Anyway who knows for sure these are all remain supporters ? I know of no evidence they are more tardy than 'exit' supporters.

The website(s) for registering to vote in Parliamentary elections have not broken and stopped people registering. If they did, then I assume the deadline could be extended.
The computer crashed for two hours, so why an extension of two days?
Khandro,
I assume it is to allow for publicity that the website is open, to permiate to those who tried and failed to register.

The site crashed after the debates...is it not possible that Farage did such a good job that those who were undecided were galvanised to register?

A difference between this and a General Election is that as long as your voter registration details haven't changed, you get a polling card through the post without you having to do anything.

I wonder whether there were a lot of people who assumed it would be the same for the Referendum?
It is the same for the referendum. I received my polling cad because I was already registered for last year's election.
And I did.
I realise that some voters weren't on the register as for instance they had just moved house but for the majority it's because they couldn't be bothered to go on the electoral register. Now at the last minute, they decide they are interested in voting since the issue might affect them. I say that's their own fault and they shouldn't blame the system for it. If you have ever been out canvassing in an election, you often encounter this attitude - "We don't vote 'cos it doesn't change anything". Well - you've shot yourselves in the foot now - I don't have much sympathy with them

A deadline is for both parties. The deadline cannot be brought forward 2 hours (even if inadvertant) and say hard luck you should have registered last week. The closing time has to be adhered to, and it wasn't, hence the extension.

I am guessing that this glitch has mainly affected people registering to vote for the first time. What we take for granted may seem a bit bewildering for a young person. It is human nature for people to do things at the last minute, so the system should be built to cope with a peak demand, and it wasn't.
sp, I'm on the register and I got my card in the post. It is the same for a referendum.

I can't understand why those not on the register left it until the last moment. They can't say they haven't had time.
People often leave doing things until the last minute, it is human nature.
Go to the supermarket at 3.30pm on sunday, and it is packed because the deadlind is 4pm. This is like closing the supermarket at 2pm unannounced, and telling the latecomers it is their fault they did not get their shopping.

The system broke (sadly very common for Government IT) so a remedy has been put in place. Why is this solution not better than disenfranchising people?
^We had a big queue at the tills at 4pm,,,,,,,so we stayed open until 12.
Gromit, if you're talking to me, I couldn't give a hoot if they extend the deadline.
^cos it suited us.
You can't really blame those late to register, espaecially as their dog ate their homework and the website was broken by bigger boys who subsequently ran away.

Even in darkest Caledonia those of us on the voter roll have received our polling cards. To imagine that the hundreds of thousands of latistas have all recently moved house or whatever in nonsensical. Lazy, disorganised, professional agitators even but it's nowt to do with Lispin' Phil and Shrill Kirstie.
I'm more concerned about them sending Poll Cards to anyone with an NI number, including those not entitled to vote. They will use this 'confusion' to excuse this,,,,,3 months after the vote.
I received my card by post because one of the first things I did on my return to the UK was to go on the elector roll. If the website only crashed for 2 hours then there should, IMO, be intensive advertising that it will reopen for 2 hours between the times of.... whatever, today or tomorrow morning. Anything else is unfair. There is, even so, the question about legality, because the closing time is, I believe, set in law. I don't think anyone would challenge just the replacement 2 hours, but 2 days is definitely open to challenge. Dave is desperate.
“People often leave doing things until the last minute, it is human nature.”

I certainly don’t. It’s stupid strategy which will often end in tears. The people attempting to register did not just have last Tuesday to do so. They have had weeks and weeks, 24/7. Their stupidity meant that they found themselves at the back of a long queue to get in and the door was to be closed at midnight. It matters not a jot what way they intended to vote, their own lack of forethought and the belief that the world revolves solely around them and their needs meant they came unstuck. As I said in a related question, it will be interesting to see how many of them leave it until 23:55 on the revised cut off day before they make their next attempt.
