This clue is part of a word spiral, with the last letter of one clue forming the first letter of the next. The previous clue was Irish Republic (4 letters - I put Eire) and the following clue is Decree (5 letters - I put Edict). So the answer Black didn't make sense to me. Any ideas please? Many thanks in advance.

Am I being thick, if the clue was Irish and you put Eire and the following clue was Decree and you used the E from Eir(e) and put Edic(t) surely your next answer should begin with a T.
I think the word we are looking for comes BETWEEN Eire and Edict, so must start and end with E.
But I think something has gone wrong
Thank you factor-fiction for explaining and yes I think possible something has gone wrong
Edict could be Order, although that wouldn't allow BLACK either.
Is there an Irish name for Eire?
Erin?
Actually Eire is the Irish name. I was thinking of Poblacht na hÉireann, but that won't fit and doesn't help with Black. I wondered if black could be ebony, although the biblical quote does say 'black'
There are two threads on this which is really confusing. Next time, roz, please post your corrections or comments in the original thread - people are answering both at the moment, not realising you started a second one as well.
if it's Erin, how about Noire for black?
The clue cites a quotation in inverted commas so I don't think an alternative to the word black is correct. The most likely explanation is that the setter has made a mistake.

I hang my head in shame! I gave the wrong clue for these letters. I can't even blame it on Christmas tipples because I'm teetotal. A very major senior moment and I apologise for causing you all to rack your brains. May I wish all Quizzers and Puzzlers a blessed and peaceful 2014 - and please don't ban me from the site!
