What is the letter pattern you are confident with?

Is there a clue '2' across and/or down?
Rat or in oy. The o in oy is the first ring but don't know why y should be a ring.
Have seen it answered as 'ability' - no idea why though. May make more sense when you answer Mamya's questions.
Which crossword is it please?
Question Author
Thanks, Mamy, yours and the other answers have only just come in. I have O*A*O*Y, which are definitely correct. Yes, the Y is a mystery, but the setter of this crossword sometimes goes 'off piste'!
and there's no connection to a 2d 0r 2a?
Question Author
Captain2, it's the Scottish Field April 2021, which perhaps you don't have!
Question Author
Mamy, 2 down is 'Vantage point to fish' Angle

No 2 across
Thanks for replying, yes - 'off piste' describes this one.
I think it is probably a setter’s error
Sorry, just seen my name up there ^^ - I can't see a precise parse & tend to agree with Toorak above, a setter's error.

However, if it is indeed "off-piste", the setter's explanation would be welcome... :-)

Hello Lie-In King, thanks for checking in! The setter is sometimes not very cryptic e.g. "Crawler with no legs" Answer "Worm"! With the two rings, I wonder if he started off with 'oratorio' in mind?
Something to do with "oyez oyez" - a town crier's two rings??
Question Author
JJ, what an original idea - I think you may have cracked it! However the setter is really stretching a point, if that's the answer.
Oratory- rat (animal) & or inside OO (two rings)
yes danny but the queries been where the Y come from. Was there a ? at the end of the clue?
Still doesn't make sense to me Danny

Please explain
Mea Culpa. Misread the clue.
My guess is that 'OORY' is supposed to adjectivally represent 'Shown in two rings'.
My bet would be a setter's error.
Question Author
Thank you everybody. Case closed - setter's error, I reckon.
