I am trying to order something from Amazon, and when I get to "Checkout" I get a page saying "To continue, approve the notification sent to --------22" (which is my cell phone# showing only the last two digits) My phone rings and I get a 5 digit number. What am I supposed to do with this number? This must be something new and it's really frustrating

Looks like you have 2 step verification set up. Follow this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201962400
Is there not a box on the checkout page for you to enter the 5 digit number
Yes, what ubasses says- try adding the 5digit code onto the end of your password when asked to enter that
If you want to, you can disable Two-Step Verification:

Apologies to sanmac if this isnt solved. But while your on Buenchico, am unable to use Amazon as there 2 stop verification involves an old phone number after changing my phone so a cant get the code. Tried logging on to change the number but again it sends a code to my old number. Any tips??

That's OK, Bobb, latch on to Buenchico while he's here:) Anyway, thanks to you all. I will go to my account and disable two -step-verification. I will let you know what happens...Thanks again.
Log into your Amazon account in the usual way. Hover in the down arrow next to your name in the "Account and List" box. In the drop down menu that appears click on "Your Account". In the next menu click on "Log In and Security". In there you can update all details including mobile phone numbers and payment details. Remember that if you are letting the pc "remember you" at the moment then you will need your account password to proceed. Look it up if you have it and can't remember it, or it looks like you are going to have to get a new password via your email account.
I’ve never ever had my phone ring. Pretty sure I was txt a code tho.......

Well, no luck. I click on "My Account" with the intent, as suggested, to disable 2 step verification and I get a page asking me to log in, so I log in and I get the page that says "To continue, approve the notification sent to --------22". A few seconds later I get a text with a 5 digit number and no pace to enter it. Absolutely ridiculous.

Maybe if I had a "smart" phone there is a place to enter that number; however, my phone is just the basic make and return calls and texts. But I've a had this phone for all the time that I have been dealing with Amazon and have not run into this situation...As I said previously really really frustrating.
Go to https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/contact-us .
You'll be required to sign in but I'm hoping that, at this stage (since you're not ordering anything), you won't fall foul of the two-step verification thing again.

If you can get past the sign-in box, click 'Start chatting now' to try to get through (eventually) to a real human being who can help you.

Alternatively try these phone numbers:
0800 496 1081 (Free from both landlines and mobiles)
0800 279 7234 (Ditto)
020 3356 6212 (Free if, say you've got free evening calls as part of a landline package and you phone at the right time. Also free if you've got unused minutes available as part of a mobile 'bundle'. Otherwise charged as a normal call to London)
020 7084 7911 (Ditto)

Thanks, Buenchico, I'll try that link tomorrow. As for the phone numbers, since I live in Canada I will try to find the equivalent phone numbers for over here. Actually, I am trying to buy something and that's why I'm running into this mess at "Checkout"...Thanks for the help.
I have just ordered something no problem without having to go through a 2 stage verification. Strange.
Just a thought:

(I'm struggling here because, like Jack, I've not two-step authentication enabled either).

It occurs to me that it's likely that you're mean to enter the 5-digit code you get on your phone into a box which should appear on your computer screen. If you're not seeing such a box, it might well be a problem with your browser. So try another browser and see what happens.

I just realized that the link Buenchico gave me in his last post was for amazon uk. Strange thing is that when I clicked on it, my Canadian email showed up!

OK, I'll try another browser tomorrow...I've had enough for today:)
Having just added 'amazon.ca' to my search terms, I've found a link which suggests that the very first answers on this thread (from Ubasses and Bobbinwales combined) might be what you're looking for anyway. Ubasses' link goes to the Amazon USA site but this link, from Amazon Canada, appears to be identical:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201962400
i.e. you need to try to sign in for a second time but then adding the 5 digit code onto the end of your regular password.

Well, I finally got it fixed. Even though I already have an account, I phoned the help-line for "Having trouble setting up an account?" The guy I was talking to was very helpful and knowledgeable and tried different methods to fix the problem. It turned out I just had to change my password.
I'm glad you got there in the end, Sanmac!

Some people love Amazon, while others totally loathe the company, but most seem to agree that their customer service (especially over the phone) is far better than that provided by many other organisations. There are certainly a lot of government agencies, here in the UK, that could learn a lot from the way that Amazon does things!
