Help With Amazon.
22 Answers
I am trying to order something from Amazon, and when I get to "Checkout" I get a page saying "To continue, approve the notification sent to --------22" (which is my cell phone# showing only the last two digits) My phone rings and I get a 5 digit number. What am I supposed to do with this number? This must be something new and it's really frustrating

Log into your Amazon account in the usual way. Hover in the down arrow next to your name in the "Account and List" box. In the drop down menu that appears click on "Your Account". In the next menu click on "Log In and Security". In there you can update all details including mobile phone numbers and payment details. Remember that if you are letting the pc "remember you" at the moment then you will need your account password to proceed. Look it up if you have it and can't remember it, or it looks like you are going to have to get a new password via your email account.
Well, no luck. I click on "My Account" with the intent, as suggested, to disable 2 step verification and I get a page asking me to log in, so I log in and I get the page that says "To continue, approve the notification sent to --------22". A few seconds later I get a text with a 5 digit number and no pace to enter it. Absolutely ridiculous.
Maybe if I had a "smart" phone there is a place to enter that number; however, my phone is just the basic make and return calls and texts. But I've a had this phone for all the time that I have been dealing with Amazon and have not run into this situation...As I said previously really really frustrating.

You'll be required to sign in but I'm hoping that, at this stage (since you're not ordering anything), you won't fall foul of the two-step verification thing again.
If you can get past the sign-in box, click 'Start chatting now' to try to get through (eventually) to a real human being who can help you.
Alternatively try these phone numbers:
0800 496 1081 (Free from both landlines and mobiles)
0800 279 7234 (Ditto)
020 3356 6212 (Free if, say you've got free evening calls as part of a landline package and you phone at the right time. Also free if you've got unused minutes available as part of a mobile 'bundle'. Otherwise charged as a normal call to London)
020 7084 7911 (Ditto)

Just a thought:
(I'm struggling here because, like Jack, I've not two-step authentication enabled either).
It occurs to me that it's likely that you're mean to enter the 5-digit code you get on your phone into a box which should appear on your computer screen. If you're not seeing such a box, it might well be a problem with your browser. So try another browser and see what happens.

Having just added 'amazon.ca' to my search terms, I've found a link which suggests that the very first answers on this thread (from Ubasses and Bobbinwales combined) might be what you're looking for anyway. Ubasses' link goes to the Amazon USA site but this link, from Amazon Canada, appears to be identical:

i.e. you need to try to sign in for a second time but then adding the 5 digit code onto the end of your regular password.

I'm glad you got there in the end, Sanmac!
Some people love Amazon, while others totally loathe the company, but most seem to agree that their customer service (especially over the phone) is far better than that provided by many other organisations. There are certainly a lot of government agencies, here in the UK, that could learn a lot from the way that Amazon does things!
