When I was a lad, you could take a quid, go to the pictures with your girlfriend,, pop into the pub for the last drink on the way home, get fish and chips, and the last bus home, and still have fifteen bob left over.

Do you believe me?

Do you have similar stories to tell your kids / grandkids?

Yeah, I could go and watch the Villa buy a program get 10 fags and a pint for five bob.
The Capstick bloke only did 73 hour shifts, he'd have had the sack where I worked as a kid ( tot, putting himself on short time just c'us he felt like it ).
How long did it take to save £1 from what would have been a small salary in the first place ?

That being said, I think there was more value in money back in the good ole days :)

I remember 1/6 to go to the flicks, and 6d for a quarter of sweets.
I believe you, I was there too (no kids to pass on the story to unfortunately).

My memory however is far from perfect, so just out of curiosity, can you provide a breakdown of your 5/- spend :-)
I used to go to a nightclub with a bird, meal, taxi home and still have change out of 200 quid.

Yes your right, crazy isn't it, Canary. That is the price of a replica shirt at most clubs these days.
When I was a lad about nine or ten
Summers were long school holidays great then
I played in our street we had so much fun
Me and my mates in the warm summer sun.

We felt really safe as we played in our street
We respected the bobby as he walked his beat
Cricket and football in the street we would play
My mate smashed a window we all ran away.

The girls played skipping with their hair in a bow
We would rather play fight , climb trees you know
We would play marbles and conkers make paper planes too
Me and my mates found plenty to do.

We even built a trolley using wheels from a pram
We chased all the girls they squealed as they ran
The days were so long much time to kill
I remember playing roly poly down that grassy hill.

We tried to build a raft with some oil drums tied to a big plank
We took it to the river guess what it sank
I had so much fun growing up as a lad
I was bit of a rascal but good times we all had.

And it cost F.A.
Saturday morning, 3d bus fare into town, 6d ABC Minors, ( 3 hours film entertainment) 3d for chips, 3d bus fare home. Total cost 1 shilling and 3 pence or 7.5 new pence.
