Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favourite 'fast food' when you were growing up?'
'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him.
'All the food was slow.'
'C'mon, seriously.. Where did you eat?'
'It was a place called 'home,'' I explained. !
'Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

My absolute favourite was Pie and mash! Saturday treat while carrying home tons of potatos for my many siblings. Oh they were the days x
Someone posted the full version of this not so long ago.

Do people really eat out all the time or have takeaways? I don't think so.
puss I'm doing pie and mash tomorrow, I'll save a seat for you.

Nostalgia, the choice of TV channel was on or off. The colours were black and white.

Jem, how's your eye doing? Settled down? x
Thanks alba, oh the taste of pie and mash is amazing.
My sister has come 50 miles in past years just to visit and mainly enjoy a pie and mash. Yummy "Enjoy" x
Both my parents worked full time, but there was always a 'proper' meal on the table. The only thing that comes near fast food we had were homemade burgers, or 'cecils' as they were known. I remember watching her put diced onion, breadcrumbs, a large egg and seasoning into the meat - she'd pretend to 'salt and pepper me too.
I dread to ask, Cecils? how and why?
No other reason than I'm blooming nosey :-)
As a kid, gammon and eggs was mine...........
I have absolutey no idea why they were called Cecils. My Mum is Irish so I don't know if that has anything to do with it!
explains a lot spikey, enough said :-D
Mums of any nationality are a weird bunch.

DT Gammon and eggs as is a gammon steak or bacon and eggs?
ooh, there's some lovel sounding tasty things on there.
don't tell aber gness about the guiness one though :-D

I fancy the dumplings
gammon steak, alba
Pretty much the same as jem except for Fridays when we dined from the local chippy, three three-penny mixes with bits for us kid, fish and chips for mum and dad, used to get the lot for 2/6d
the BIL from hell likes an egg on his gammon steak, I prefer pineapple. Even his own dad doesn't understand why he likes it.
Jam and kipper sandwich,
Agree with your BIL Alba, can't stand pineapple. Has to be egg & chips with mine.
maggie!!! no no and no on so many levels,it's just wrong. Apparently the egg has to be runny.
Egg & Gammon & Pineapple & Peas & Chips ...

... all good - just keep the peas away from the egg yolk though :)
I never understand these rose tinted view of the past posts.

There have been fish and chip shops for years and years. Many areas had/have bakers that sold/sell pies made on the premises.

OK so there has been a proliferation of burger/kebab/pizza joints but it doesn't mean that takeaway food is a modern phenomena.
chips need to be dunked into the egg yolk though :-D
