What are some slang words particular to your neighborhood that outsiders don't get? For instance, where I live an average conversation might go "What are yinz doin' tonight?"(what are you two...) "Ah, goin' dantan to eat some hoagies and pop n'at." (going downtown ...sub sandwiches and soda and that)

This could be an interesting thread but it has the potential to go on for ever! Nothing to do with my neighbourhood, but I once heard (possibly one of those urban myths) that the powers that be had to change the wording of signs at level crossings. The original wording was, "DO NOT CROSS WHILE LIGHTS FLASH". Unfortunately, in some parts of the north of England, "while" can also mean "until". The consequences could have been disastrous!
The Potteris dialect, which like all dialects is slowly dying out, is a virtual foreign langauge to those from outside the area. A famous phrase, which any native will know is "Sit thee dine yeowth, they looks clemmed!" which means "Sit down, you look thirsty." Local cartoonist Dave Fallows wrote a long running cartoon strip for the local evening paper - the 'Sentinel' entitled 'May un Mah Lady' - My wife and I' which is being re-rum after his sad death. Check this title on Google for examples - if you read the spedch phonetically, you can get a flavour of how the dialiect is spoken.
