the person you thought you had a date with didn't turn up.
To stand someone up - originally American slang from the 1920s - means to fail to appear as arranged. It usually refers to a 'date'...ie a meeting between a man and a woman...when one of the people involved does not show. Perhaps the phrase comes from the idea that the person who did appear feels conspicuous just standing there, glancing constantly at his/her watch!
