There is no record of the verb 'go missing' - or its past tense form, 'went' - before the late 1950s. However, it is just one of many such phrases...such as 'went mad' or 'went native'...some of which date back to the 16th century.
I would have thought 'going AWOL' (absent without official leave, military phrase) was an immediate predecessor?
