Had 3 grandchildren plus Maggie the hamster to stay for the weekend. While Mum and Dad had a weekend away, other 3 farmed our elsewhere. Maggie got out of her ball last night, luckily I spotted her running across the kitchen so got her, put her back in her ball and sellotaped it up.
They all went home tonight. Daughter has just phoned to say Maggie is no more. She kept ramming her ball against the wall to open it to get out, she has been doing this for weeks, they have a little Yorkshire Terrier who follows her around in her ball and a few times has been found washing her to death, he doesn't hurt her , they have tried to stop him. Well tonight they found her soaking wet with blood coming from her mouth - dead. Granddaughter is distraught. So Maggie is no more!

so sad to read that - none of our hamsters were allowed in those balls.

Night little Maggie.x
Sad news for your granddaughter.
This hamster is no more! It has ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet its maker....
If I hadn't read it on here I would not have believed it.
That is sad. So sorry to read about the wee hamster. :0(

Thank you Mamya and Marval, We thought she would be ok in it. She was safe here as we have no other animals. But they have 2 cats and 2 dogs but only the terrier was interested. The problem is they live in a big old house that is open plan so couldn't shut her in a room away from other animals, they tried to be in the same room (mainly the kitchen/diner) where she could have a really good run
but Angus(dog) was so interested in her.

Thanks Windywillow
Wouldn't the hamster be existing in a living hell being surrounded by cats and dogs?
My thoughts exactly Mick

Mick she had a big 4 storey wooden house, it had 12 interconnecting rooms and she loved it, she just needed exercise. Only 1 dog took any notice of her, most of the time her was pushed away and made to stay away but terriers being what they are he chased her in her ball. It was only when she started crashing into walls to make the ball come apart that the problem started. They thought they had it under control but sadly didn't. At least she had a nice safe hasslefree weekend here with us.
sorry to hear this news, hope Maggie had had a good life, seems she led a wild life
Sounds like she had a ball!
Some people should not own animals.
Ah how sad. The worst of it is seeing the kids so devastated after they've lost a pet.
Sorry about Maggie, my yorkie used to love to watch my daughters hampter in its cage but didnt go near it. I think those balls are only meant for a short time (ie while cleaning the cage) not as a permenant home.

Dont agree with the comment about cats and dogs near hampsters , when she was young my daughter had a different hampster that lived in the utiliry room (open plan like your daughter's house) the cats were so no interested in her even Jess who like to hunt mice and squirells!
Poor hamster must've been terrified about the dog literally stalking it whilst it was in its ball.
hamsters are supposed to be in cages not sodding balls glad its dead at least it's stopped been driven mad, poor little thing
I feel very sorry for the hamster, it must have been very frightened trapped in the ball. No wonder it tried to escape. RIP hamster - I hope they don't get another one.
'they have tried to stop him' Sorry carandrog, they didn't try hard enough !
Totally agree with the comments on here feeling sorry for it.
