i bought a new car then had a crash the same evening i thought i was coverd on my van insurance which turns out to have expired without me realiseng ( which is was silly thing to do ) now i have to produce my licence does anyone no what the punishment will be because im really worried

How can your licence expire - they don't last a year now.

Oh, I guess I have been on here TOO long today.....
dumbrich... you'll probably get done for driving without valid insurance... wait for someone more qualified to answer though...
I believe 6 points and �200 is the likely punishment.

You will also have to bear the cost of replacing the Third Party's vehicle (assuming you were to blame).
How does your insurance run out without you knowing? You will have had a reminder - no defense

If you were to blame ofr the accident then you may well be charged with a lot more than driving with no insurance

On the subject of licences, please check the expiry date - the photo cards run out a lot sooner than the old green ones did and many people do/did not know this. You may well find yourself driving on an epxired licence
