I don't cry often, but like anyone, something can just catch me ...

I was chatting with my youngest daughter on the phone last night, and she works as a TA in an inner-city school, so deprivation is pretty much the set format for the kids she works with.

She was telling me about one little girl of about four, who is always dirty, and clearly isn't washed every day. My daughter was talking to her just before Christmas, and asking her what she wanted Santa to bring her. "A Curly Wurly Bar." was the reply. "I've never ever had one and they look really nice, so if Santa could bring me one, I'd really like that." My daughter asked if the child would ask Santa for anything else for Christmas, and she replied, "No, just a Curly Wurly, that's all I have ever wanted, just to taste one."

I thought that over about an hour later, on my own, and I cried like a baby for a child whose expectations are so simple, but still not reachable.

I was crying about little Daniel Pelka the other day. No idea why he popped into my head, but the poor little mite.... breaks my heart.

Another one was in the supermarket the day before Mothers Day. Loads of people were buying flowers for their mums. I had to go and weep in a corner for a little while.

I hope that little girl got a Curly Wurly.
we sometimes dont realise how lucky we are andy
I'd cry about that.

I cry very easily. Films, stories, death (I don't even have to know the person) luckily my OH is an emotional soul as well so he completely understands my tears.

I'm not stupid emotional though. I don't cry if we have cross words or the kids play up. Just sad things.

We were watching 'Derek' the other day and both of us were crying. They had to put the dog down and Ricky Gervais acted it brilliantly. So emotional.
I cry so easily - just this morning I was blubbing like a bairn at call the midwife!
Facebook posts make me cry - my friend lost her beloved dog last night and I cried for over an hour!
Jo - That reminds me, my Dad used to buy me an Easter egg every year. Usually a really big one. The Easter after he died I sobbed because it's the first time in my life I'd never received an egg. I didn't actually eat them, I used to give it to the kids, but that's not the point.
I think I’m going to cry. I hope she got her Curly Wurly and that it met her expectations. Bless her.

Certain songs make me cry. The worst two are Against All Odds and Kevin Rudolf Great Escape.

Leaving the House on Christmas Day also makes me cry.

I cannot relate to a situation involving someone that I only knew by name. brought it up one hour later and then cried like a baby. To me that indicates a degree of un-natural emotional instability.
If the incident involves me personally and directly, friend, wife etc....then I might react by a sort of reactive depression, I might even cry, but I have seen so much tragedy in the world, that a child who just wants a Curly Wurly Bar for Christmas leaves me just cold.

not having a birthday cake from mum first time ever in my life made me cry
I cried at the final of crufts when those protesters came in, and the winner's immediate reaction was to grab her dog and run to safety. No hesitation, pure love in the middle of a crisis. I cried.
It's not emotional instability, Sqad, it's empathy.
ummmm...one can be empathetic without bursting into tears.

I think that's sad as well.

The point is, when you are not washed, given clean clothes, fed properly, tucked up in bed, or generally loved as all children should be, then a Curly Wurly can seem like the best thing in the world.

If it doesn't make you count your blessings, than that's fine.

As for your cod-diagnosis about my emotional stability, I am sure there is somewhere that the sun doesn't shine that has room for it - personally, I don't.
Athro, I think she was protecting her investment !! .
The last time I cried was Tuesday. Everything was going really wrong, I was stressed beyond words and the frustration just bubbled over.

But that's rare.

Normally when I cry it's through happiness. I cried on Christmas Day cos I was so happy. I have no doubt there will be a few tears this weekend.

Oh and films and sad things on the TV make me cry.

Stories like yours AH touch a nerve and I might well up a little bit too.
Anne, no way, protecting her fur-baby!
People are different, Sqad. Before my dad died, and I absolutely adored him, I was probably quite emotionally reserved. His death broke my heart but it taught me about how fragile people can be and it taught me to try and put myself in someone elses shoes.
Oh...I cry when I'm angry/frustrated but that's because I don't hit people!
ummmm

I agreed with you in my post.
